Rimondi Fountain
We almost walked right by this fountain in Rethymno, lions spitting water out... Hey Y'all,
Ha ha, sounding all cowboy on you! Just kidding! How is everyone doing? We hope everyone is doing spantastic (just for you Dean). So Rethymno, was aight. Nothing spectacular. There was not too much to do. We went to the old Venetian fortress and then walked around the town. Kim saved a fish that was swimming upstream onto the beach. It did however, start its journey back upstream as soon as Kim saved it, silly fish. We walked around the town and the port and then just went to bed early, nothing really exciting.
We got up earlier the next day so that we could come to Hania as soon as we could and we are both glad we did. Hania is a much nicer town. It is about twice as big as Rethymno but the old town is so pretty and cool and luckily, that is where we are staying. Our hostel is an old turkish building about 40 m from the water front. We are up on the top floor in an amazing room with a terrace opposite to our room that we can see the sea from. It is really cool and big
A little taste of Pirates of the Caribbean
We seen the ship of Captain Barbarossa in the old Venetian port in Rethymno. and for only 35 euro a night, probably the nicest and coolest we have stayed in so far. We got settled in and then just walked around town checking out all of the cool shops and stuff. We went for lunch and then Kim wanted to go to the public gardens and zoo and let me tell you she loved it, it was so cute...but I will let her tell you about the zoo...
Here's Kimmy!
Heehee, I agree with Dennis, Hania (pronounced han-yah) is much better than Rethymno (re-thim-no) and Iraklio. The zoo was sooo fun! Here on Crete, there is a wild goat that only lives in two places, the Samaria Gorge (longest in Europe at 18km, which you will hear more about later) and on Kri-Kri island. Yep, the goat is called the Kri-Kri! So we walked into the zoo and there are Kri Kri there! So I get all excited, and start feeding them dried corn that they gobbled up. There were 3 males, and 2 females (this is vital information for later). The boys have beards and long horns, while the girls don't have any. They were all super cute. Then we found
Lighthouse in Hania
It's a 1.5 km walk around to get to the lighthouse. Super crazy considering the wind we endured! the peacocks (we think one was getting attacked by the others, he kept running everywhere and seemed drunk or agitated), then the swans (very pretty) and then the cockatoos (VERY annoying!). But then we went back to the Kri Kri because there seemed to be a fight going on! It was super fun, the male kri kri were all banging their horns and wrestling and we couldn't figure out why... until.. they went chasing after the females! THEN WE KNEW WHY!!!! They were trying to get the females attention.. we left soon after, we did not want to see any Kri Kri mating, no matter how rare they are!
Either way, yesterday was a relaxing day. We walked the 1.5 km roundabout to the lighthouse and back. It was super windy out yesterday so we were almost blown away, but don't worry, we made it safely home. We saw some crabs, some fish, and some cats, as always. We just explored the town and then ate a fabulous dessert of chocolate mousse pie and strawberry and cheesecake ice cream.
This morning, was something else. We set our alarm for 7:00 so that we could get up, eat breakfast,
Kri Kri!
Hee hee, look at them vie for the females attention... sure glad our boys don't do it that way! pack our lunch, and head to the Samaria Gorge! We got on the 8:30 bus for the trip to the top. It was cloudy out, our first clouds of the trip. Then it started to rain.. uh oh. We arrived at the top of the gorge around 9:45 and then started our descent. But not through the gorge, back on the bus. The gorge was CLOSED! Ahhhh! It was raining too hard so that the river was flooding. Oh goodness. No Samaria for us today. We were pretty upset, especially since the bus rides here really make me feel sick and then we spent 3 hours round trip for nothing. Dennis got sick driving down too, it was a badddddddddd trip back down. It was kind of like the road to Hana in Hawaii Terri (in Maui), all windy roads and up and down. So anyways, we are hoping to make it to the Samaria Gorge tomorrow or Sunday. There is mass at the Catholic church here both days, so we will get our Jesus time in either way, don't you worry Mikey!
So we just came home, slept a bit, then ate lunch and now we are here,
Waves all a crashin!
This is around the lighthouse right on the wind. Biggest waves we've seen yet in Greece! writing to all of you. We might check out a couple of museums, go to the beach, or just walk around again. Hopefully, tomorrow is Samaria, but we have a phone number now to call and check in the morning, so that we don't pay 12 Euro again for no reason.
Miss you and love you all,
Yours in Christ,
Kim and Dennis
