27 May 2008 In dull and sometimes rainy weather we had a botanical day.
After leaving the camper stop we spent a pleasant morning wandering around Erfurt’s town gardens called the Egapark. Highlights were the cacti and butterflies in the collection of greenhouses and the Japanese rock garden built on the slope of a hill.
Afterwards we drove 45k northwest to the Hainich National Park, Germany’s largest remaining deciduous forest. There we were able to climb up 25m to a walkway called the Baumkronenphad which passes through the crown of the beeches and other varieties. We thought it was better than the similar attraction we went to at Bad Harzbuburg because the forest is denser and more extensive and the structure being higher it gives a better view of the tops of the trees.
We stayed at a nearby campsite.
