23 May 2016 Goslar’s history is interwoven with the Rammelsberg mine which produced 27 million tonnes of copper, lead and zinc ore during over 1,000 years of operation until its closure in 1988. It is now a World Heritage museum. We visited there today and went on an excellent underground tour of several levels of the Roeder Galleries which, during the 19
th century, used huge water wheels driven by a river diverted through the mine to provide the power to lift the ore to the surface and pump out contaminated water.
Afterwards we drove 70k and are staying on a pleasant rural camp site just north of Nordhausen.
