We got up early and caught the 7.50 train through the tunnel. This left us plenty of time to drive to Brussels where John and Claire Ray entertained us with a lovely Belgian lunch. John is Wendy’s half third cousin twice removed and they made contact while Wendy was carrying out research into her family’s history. John and Claire live on the 20th floor of a block of flats with fantastic views over Brussels. It was really good to have the opportunity of meeting them.

As we left we had a delay sorting out an alarm on the van that wouldn’t go off We at first thought a jammed reversing sensor was causing the trouble but after a fair amount of abortive investigation it turned out that the van step wasn’t properly closed which took about 30 seconds to put right. Another lesson learned!

Most of the day had now slipped by so we stopped just inside the German border at Aachen at an excellent camper stop that we last used a couple of years ago.
