I am a little behind in updating my blog. Yesterday, I actually made an entry en route to Dresden using the wireless card but when I went to save it, I lost my connection, and my entire entry! So, today, have just a few minutes before we are out sightseeing for the day to write a few words.
The last few days have been so enjoayable as we explore different parts of Saxony. Starting back to Tuesday, I will try to fill in the blanks of what we have been up to. We enjoyed a visit with Jens, Ralf's brother, in Limbach which is a small village near Chemnitz. It was a beautiful drive through rolling hills and countryside and Limbach is actually the town where Ralf was raised so we spet some time exploring there. Tuesday night is "sauna night", a weekly tradition with Ralf and his friends so I was able to experience that as well. They follow a certain regimen that involves sitting in the 230 degree sauna for 15 minutes, followed by a plunge in the cold pool and then social time in the lounge with beer and conversation. They repeat this 3 times over the
course of the evening so it really is a social event and they have been doing this every Tuesday for many years. Sauna is followed by dinner at a Greek restaurant, also in Limbach ,and the food was excellent and the people so welcoming and accomodating! I have never tried so many different kinds of food and the thing that strikes me is that even foods that are familiar by name are very different here so every meal is an adventure! Especially when the menu is in German!
Yesterday morning we had a run to the local bakery for fresh rolls and struedel kuchen. Seemed ironic mixing exercise and bakery goods but a fun adventure nonetheless! After breakfast Ralf gave me a tour of Chemnitz which I learned actually has a population of about 250,000, much larger than I originally thought. The city was an industrial center for Saxony and you can see the remains of huge old vacant factories and industrial campuses. We spent some time exploring the downtown area and I will have pictures to post in the next few days. Lesson for the day is how to distinguish between men's and women's bathrooms! Good to know
now that I need to look for "Damen" on the door!
In the afternoon we drove to Dresden which is about 45 minutes from Chemitz and is also where Ines lives. It is a much larger city (population 518,000) and the beuaty of the city is overwheming. The city center here was actually destroyed by bombers at the end of WWII but rebuilt to look authentic during the nineties. I took many pictures but will need to upload them when we get back to the bungalow tomorrow. There is much to write about th day in Dresden and an excellent visit with Ines, a charming young beauty, but will need to catch up on that in the next few days since we have a great deal of sightseeing, including a steam boat ride on the River Albe today. Tschüss for now!
