Cologne is a city city totally rebuilt. Everything in the city was destroyed in World War 2 except the cathedral. It was saved from allied bombing because it was used as a navigational aid by allied bombers. It was one of the few landmarks that was recognizable from high altitude. The cathedral begun in 1248 and not completed until 1880. It is a masterpiece of high Gothic architecture and one of the largest cathedrals in Europe. Some idea of how the cathedral may be glimpse in the first picture. We we in Kunigswinter about 15 to 20 km from Cologne on top of a hill at the ruins of an castle where I snapped a long distant photo towards Cologne. The day was overcast one can understand just how prominent the cathedral is.
