After our heavy dinner the night before, we decided to start the day with a nice jog along the Mosel River Walk. What a beautiful way to see a little more of this gorgeous area while this charming little village was just coming to life. (Although, admittedly there was a part of me that thought staying in bed and admiring the Reichsburg Castle seemed like an equally adequate way to enjoy the start of our third day in Germany!) After a nice breakfast at the hotel, we loaded up our suitcases (no east feat in itself considering my heavy packing tendencies and the extended duration of our trip!) We hit the road and spent the next few hours driving along the Mosel River towards Trier with stops in several of the little villages along the way. According to what we’ve learned, ever since Roman days, the landscape on the banks of the Mosel has been regarded as one of the most beautiful romantic areas in Germany and even in Europe. There are 2000 years of history for the taking and this continues to fascinate me as we soak up as much as we can from this experience. Pictures really can’t capture
the vineyards because that aspect is completely overwhelming but I tried to get some shots along the way and especially of the little villages where we stopped to explore or do wine tastings. Hands down, my favorite stop of the day was Bernkastle-Kues! This picturesque village was nestled below a hillside vineyard and was bustling with locals and tourists shopping, eating, drinking and just enjoying life. I loved the energy here and in hindsight, wish we would have made more time here. The fact that I found Schmaltz (goose grease served on hearty rye bread) on the menu at one of our refreshment breaks here weighed into my enjoyment of this stop so we captured that in some of the photos. (I know Mom…..”heart attack in the making” but we are doing a lot of walking these days. By Day 3 we’ve probably racked up at least 20 miles!) Our final destination for today was Trier. As I said, in hindsight, we probably would have stopped and stayed at Bernkastel-Kues, but we did enjoy seeing the Roman Porta Nigra (180 AD) and the Dom St Peter Liefrauenkirche (Church of our Lady)Cathedral in Trier. We took a long detour (a.k.a we
followed Ralf’s “instincts” on where we’d parked despite my feeling the best option would be to retrace the way we’d come through the city center!) getting back to the car providing us an extended view of the city and some seriously tired legs! After finding the car we began the process of trying to locate a hotel for the evening as we hadn’t made any arrangements for the evening not knowing which town we may end up in based on the day’s exploration. So tired and hungry and daylight quickly coming to an end, we finally found a “Zimmer Frei” (room available) sign at a small little inn on the outskirts of the city. Let’s just say there was a reason this gem had a zimmer frei when everything else we’d checked had no vacancy! We decided to look for an Octoberfest event that Ralf had seen advertised, but after navigating the GPS route, found it was nothing more than a few people standing around a parking lot so we opted for a quick dinner at a restaurant we spotted en route and called it a night.
