Yesterday, as Sundays typically are, was a relaxing day in Stromberg. Shops were closed, we all slept in late. Well, I thought I slept in late until I walked into the house and saw that Ferhat's mother was the only other person awake at the time. It was also a day of big meals. Wonderful and delicous breakfast with eggs, sausage, peppers, and onions... oh and the delicious Turkish bread I keep having. A few moments later, Ferhat's mother began preparing for what would be a late lunch, early dinner feast. The meal would have kebabs of three or four different kinds, rice, salad, fried vegetables, and more. I never thought I would say this, but the food has been TOO much for me. I find that I am the one that is not able to finish my meal or eat as much as others. SHOCKING, I KNOW! I worry a little that they think I am snubbing their food, but it is merely that I cannot possibly hold another ounce. I try to emphasize that I think the food is delicious to cover for what I feel like are constant no-thank-yous.
Between the breakfast and the feast, Ferhat took
me into the town of Stromberg where I saw the Stromberger Castle. I actually didn't see much of the castle but it was propped up on a hill which oversaw the gorgeous countryside. Ferhat and I actually sat looking at the scenery for most of the time, and then we went to have a tea/coffee and some German pastries. I had what was supposed to be like an apple pie, but it was more like a cake, and it didn't have cinnamon. Still good! Then the lady let me try a piece of date cake since Ferhat told her I was from America and never had one. That was good too. Both pieces of cake and the tea filled me up, and then Ferhat informed me that we had to head home where dinner would be waiting for us. Oh, my belly. Despite the fact that I had eaten what felt like 5x the amount my stomach could hold, the food was delicous, and it was very entertaining to have Ferhat's extended family over. After dinner, everyone except Ferhat's uncle and father went to have ice cream and walk through a park.
Today, we went to Munster to see
the zoo. Many animals of all different kinds. I was surprised to see many African animals in the same pen. That's not like the US. Also, instead of having one or two of a species, try having six elephants or so. Some unique sightings at the zoo: deer and horses. There was a horse museum, which seemed odd to me, but it paid homage to the animal that is famous in the country. The deer on the other hand seemed to be presented as animals just as rarely seen as the Sun Bear. I explained to Ferhat that I do not remember seeing any deer in our zoos because you can see them everywhere you go.
After the zoo, I had a wonderfully classic American meal: Burger King. The long walk in the zoo, plus the big lunch, made me so sleepy. I woke up from a nap recently and now it is dinner time. I feel a little gurgle in my belly, so I am hoping that I will be able to eat more than I have been, so I can minimize my no-thank-yous. Hehe.
