We set the alarm for 6am but didn’t really get up until 7am. Somewhere around that time there was a lot of noise in the corridor from a bunch of guys and a female guest asked them to pipe down. By 8am we were downstairs loading things back into the car. As I handed back the key, I noticed that the guy that arranged for our room change last night wasn’t there and mentioned what had happened to the receptionist who took his place for the morning shift. This promptly earnt us a free breakfast which we were both very pleased with as it would have cost us at least another €10 each to have something half decent to eat there. The yogurts we had bought the previous night went warm in the room despite being placed on the window so we couldn’t really have those anyway. I quickly called Matthew over and led him to the breakfast room where we took turns in getting extra bed, cheese and eggs for lunch later on in the day. It’s amazing how much you can fit into your handbag! By 9am we were off again, bracing ourselves for
another very long stretch of motorway across the Netherlands and Germany. We were fortunate enough however to see some nice scenery on the way and a beautiful sunset just before we approached the boarder and an eagle land and catch it’s prey from the ground. Still, I got bored in the car and as I had nothing better to do, I started teaching Matthew German and shooting some funny videos with my camera. These small moments of madness were described as motorway sickness by Matthew. I would argue that in my case I was acting out in my usual perfectly normal and strange way.
Location: Münster, Germany
We finally arrived in Münster around 12 noon and made our way to the parking area we previously chose. Once again we were not familiar with the parking rules and discovered that we only had an hour to explore after placing 50cents in the meter and not being able to put any more money in there. We obviously were not happy about this so once the hour was up we went to a different car park. The car park attendant there couldn’t speak any English but luckily the lady with him
could and she explained that we had to wait for a car to leave before we could enter. This car park was right next to the town centre and so much more convenient. There were so many Christmas stalls and I was in awe once again. Cobbled streets surrounded us with very few cars and buses passing through. The buildings were tall and narrow and resembled the buildings we saw in Amsterdam alongside the canals. We walked through the Christmas markets looking at all the lovely trinklets, Christmas decorations and German food... sausages, fries, schnitzel, mulled wine….
There were also quite a few stalls with sweets and skewered fruits dipped in chocolate which resembled kebabs! There were chocolate covered cherries, strawberries, bananas, then there where the more traditional toffee apples and candy canes. One of the stalls had a selection of round cakes which could only be described as calorie bombs! Curiosity got the best of me and I found out that there were two types: one had a light coating of flavours on the outside while the second was smothered with chocolate and and other sweet things on the outside and the centre consisted of a creamy filling
of cappuccino, chocolate or some other flavour along those lines. We walked away fairly quickly!
I bought a purple necklace and discovered some beautiful hand made stamps which were carved out of wood. My favourites were the small narrow houses and the bicycle. They were a bit too expensive though prices at €20 each so I had to give them a miss. Fortunately one of the girls at the stall printed some samples on a piece of paper and gave it to me free of charge! I think these will go in the album Matthew and I are planning on putting together with extracts from this diary, photographs and tickets we picked up along the way. It’s really inspired me to pick up my art again as I love capturing moments as I see them!
We also visited a church where Matthew became fixated on the music organ which appeared to hang from the ceiling. Personally, I was more interested in the markets so we were soon back outside. It’s just such a shame I couldn’t see my pen friend Johanna here!
At 4pm we finally left Münster and we were back on the motorway.
