01 Lust
I liked the name of the park. It is in front of the cathedral. Geo: 52.5235, 13.4115
Today was our last day and there were so many things we wanted to see and do. We checked out of the hostel and put our backpack in the luggage room to collect later on. We walked past the cathedral and through Lustgarten, crossed the bridge and came to the German History Museum. The guide book said there were some interesting things to see inside, so we paid the entrance fee and wandered among the exhibits in chronological order- beginning in 100 BC. We saw lots of beautiful paintings and artefacts. This museum was really interesting and there was a lot to see and learn here. Luckily I picked up a brochure, it doesn't take me long to forget what I learn when traveling. After about two hours we left the museum- we had a long list of things we wanted to see before we had to fly out tonight. We walked along Unter den Linden and went into the memorial to see the statue in the middle during daylight. We wanted to go to the zoo. I had heard good things about Berlin Zoo, so we caught the train to that end of the city.
We found
02 Museum
Statues along the bridge that cross over to the German History Museum. a nice pub and sat outside under the shade for our meal in Berlin. I ordered a huge schnitzel, with a red beer. It was a struggle to eat my lunch, it was way too much food, but I did the best I could and got through most of it. During lunch we decided that there wasn't enough time to see the zoo and it wasn't worth paying the entry fee when we were limited for time. Instead we decided to see the remains of the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church. All that is left is a tower due to bombing during WWII. Soon after the bombing it was destined to be demolished but it wasn't because of protests from locals. A new octagonal church has now been built for worship- very modern looking on the inside. The new tower is hexagonal. The old tower was very interesting to look at, all weathered and war torn. I was glad that it had not been demolished.
We headed in the direction of the hostel to get our bag. On the way we stopped at Potsdamer Platz and saw a replica of the first electric traffic light. Our last stop for the day
03 Saddle
This is a beautiful ivory saddle. I wonder how comfortable it would be to sit on? was the New Synagogue. The dome was very decorative from the outside. I was not as impressed when we had climbed up to the dome and then they asked for the admission fee!! Very sneaky of them. The view was not very impressive at all. I would recommend seeing the synagogue from the outside.
A few minutes later we were back at the hostel and got our bag. Walked to the nearby train station and caught the train to the airport. I loved this trip to Berlin and can't wait to come back again and explore more of the city's history and museums. Jess and I flew back to London for a good night sleep, use of washing machine and to pack our bags for Croatia...
