01 Survivor
This is the ugly, large communist building that survived the bombings Geo: 52.5235, 13.4115
This morning we did the Third Reich walking tour of Berlin. We met our guide who's English was excellent. Saw some of the buildings that survived the bombing. Found out that the SS didn't want the Brandenburg Gate destroyed, so the made 16 replicas around the city and camoflaged the original- their plan worked as it survived. Saw an old watch tower and other parts of the wall.
Next thing we were standing on top of Hitler's bunker where he killed himself. Now there is just a car park and road on the road. We then saw the Jewish Memorial which is a monument dedicated to the many German Jews who lost their lives. After it was built it was discovered that underneath the site is where Goebbel's (Hitler's 2nd in charge) was and that the waterproof paint used on the monument was supplied by the same company that gave Hitler the gas that was used to gas many Jews!! We then walked to Checkpoint Charlie which was one of the entrance/exits from east to west Berlin. Now there is an American army man holding a flag.
The pedestrian traffic lights in east Berlin have little men wearing hats and
02 Berlin wall
Part of the wall still standing protected by a fence so people don´t souvenir part of it walking. The lights in west Berlin are like the ones at home.
Had lunch at a pub and us girls tried the local beers; red (raspberry flavour) and green (citrus). They were pretty good, except not very alcoholic. Have had enough of sightseeing, so I went shopping with Laura and Bec. We managed to fill the afternoon with trying on and buying clothes.
Then we caught the tram to the meeting spot. Found Jo at a beer garden, joined her for a red beer and then we all had dinner at the restaurant.
