Bavaria Day 11
Good breakfast again at the Star G Hotel. Everything is good about the hotel except the desk system. It could not cope with several bookings made in my name. It took 1/2 hr to check-in two days ago and 20 min to attempt to pay for the breakfasts. The system would not cope and hands were thrown into the air with no accurate resolution.
The weather is still excellent for cycling and we headed through town to the English Garden and then joined the gravel cycle path which follows the river Isar for over 40km. It swaps sides on occasion, which made it more interesting riding that is apart from Shirley’s blowout on her tubeless tyre, caused by running over a stick. The grunge was wiped out and we fitted a tube in double quick time before proceeding north east again. Ten kilometres further on and it was brew time, coffee and cake. I mistook a cheese bagel for a custard bagel so swapping became the order of the day as I cannot eat that ’kase’ stuff. The day was brightened up by spying two vintage tractors on the way, a mid 1950s McCormick D324 and an immaculate 1959’s
Schluter driving along at a steady 8.567mph. The river Isar got wider and faster as we went further north as other rivers were joining it. There were a few white-water falls along the way which could be quite spectacular in times of more rainfall. Some beef cows were very pleased to see us on a small farm as we left the river since we stopped to watch them chewing their cud for 5 minutes. Well I think’pleased’ may be a bit of an exaggeration but they did blink at us a few times. A few drops of rain fell in the last 8k and it was undecided whether to put on some rain gear, eventually we decided that we weren’t in Lancashire so we carried on. The last leg was on wonderful smooth tarmac where were met by about 100 school kids coming in the opposite direction, many flaunting their skills with no hands on the handlebars. Arriving into town we passed some structural work going on in a park which is a 3 year commemorative event to remember the marriage of a Bavarian Duke to a Polish princess in 1475. Locals only are allowed to attend in traditional Bavarian
costumes and others from across the globe must attend in standard clothing. In the evening we saw many men in lederhosen and ladies in traditional dresses with hats to match. We are back in the traditional part of Bavaria. The town is very colourful with many Bavarian style houses and shops painted many colours and several stories tall, overlooked by the Castle at the top of the hill behind. St Martin’s Church is a very impressive building with a massive tower and is reckoned to be the second tallest brick structure in the world. The Michel hotel is just across the river from the old town and is very nice with good rooms and the bikes in the underground garage. The Poseidon Greek restaurant was our choice for dinner tonight and was another good choice.
