Last look Today we left our hotel in the Alps of Austria and headed back into Germany. It was really all about riding on the bus today. We did stop in Ulm, Germany where we saw the tallest church steeple in the world. One person in our group climbed to the top. A couple others tried but gave up. It was 768 steps to the top. I did take some pictures, but it is really hard to tell how tall it is from the pictures. The best thing we found at Ulm was a discount store which we thought might be similar to Kmart. We loaded up on snacks and drinks because they are quite expensive at the hotels and travel plazas. I was able to buy batteries and a charger for my camera a lot cheaper than any of the places I had checked earlier. Of course I found a bakery and bought some pastries. They are delicious and make a cheap lunch for us. Things are very pricey here. Yesterday it cost us 8.00 for two waters and a coke. Coffee averages about 3.00 per cup…and it’s a very, very small cup.
Once we left Ulm we went to the
Deer Stands
They are everywhere here. gravesite of Edwin Rommel who was the General Field Marshall for Hitler. He was accused of plotting to kill Hitler when a bomb was taken into Hitler’s office but the bomb didn’t go off. When Rommel was confronted Hitler gave him the option of going through a public trial in which case his family would be targeted, or commit suicide. If he chose the suicide then his family would be given a pension and all the benefits of his office of field marshall. So two SS Guards took him out in a car, left him alone (at his request) and when they returned to the car he was dead (apparently by cyanide poisoning). He was the Germans most famous general and probably Uncle Jim fought against him and his troops in North Africa. We also visited the spot where he committed suicide - there is a monument there - and a small private museum.
The churches here are beautiful. The graveyards are beautiful also and very unusual. Instead of grass there are gravel paths between the graves. Each grave is taken care of individually with different flowers planted and all very unique. I am including pictures I took. This
Farming
Firewook and Timber are big businesses here particular church was a pink color and very different from some of the other churches we have seen.
From Ulm we traveled to the Black Forrest at the western edge of Germany. It is known as the Black Forrest because the trees are very talk and close together. As you go further into the forrest it gets darker and darker. Some of the trees are such a dark green they look Black from the road. The drive is very interesting. This must be a good place for hunting because we see deer stands everywhere! We also see loverly communities nestledin the hills. There are farms, timber businesses and every community has a church. It is fun trying to take pictures form a moving bus.
Our hotel is in a ski resort town of Bad Herralb. Unfortunately they have lousy internet service so you won’t get this edition of our travel blog until a day later.
Tomorrow we head into France and area where Uncle Jim was injured.
