Schwarzwald-Hochstrasse
Known as the Romantic Road, the High Road and B500 The Black Forest Days:3
We traveled to The Black Forest in early October. It was a great trip for the parents and the kids! Here is our itinerary
Day 1
•Mummelsee Lake
•Glass Factory, Wolfach After a late start, we headed out on our "adventure" as we called it around 11 am. We drove to Baden-Baden to get on the Romantic Road (B500). The drive on B500 is for the grownups - the views are incredible. Plug in a video and enjoy the peace & quiet and incredible beauty of the Black Forest.
We stopped at
Lake Mummelsee for lunch and our first "adventure" as we called each activity. There is an indoor restaurant with outdoor seating or you can buy sandwiches from the shop below. After lunch, we rented a paddleboat for €4 for 30 minutes. Thirty minutes was more than enough time for my husband and I to paddle all four of us around the lake. There is a hotel there and the website has a webcam (fun!).
After our Lake Mummelsee adventure, we set the GPS for
Dorothee's Glass Hut. We had a great time touring the glass museum part and even took part in blowing our
Black Forest Clocks
On B500 between Gutach and Triberg own vase. Our six year old "made" the vase. There is also a large Christmas shop where you can buy any kind or color of glass blown ornaments.
After the glass museum, we headed to Triberg for the night. We stayed at the Best Western Hotel Schwarzwald Residenz in a family suite with our large dog. Triberg was an ideal town from which to base operations - and it has plenty to do itself. This way, if something was closed, a dud, or it was just too rainy to go out, we could always wander through town and into the many Black Forest shops there. Triberg is known for it's beautiful waterfall (more later) and the many stores where you can buy an authentic Black Forest Cuckoo Clock. There are many neat places to stay in and around Triberg.
Day 2
•Triberg Wasserfall, Triberg
•Open Air Museum - Schwarzwalder Freilichtmuseum Vogtsbauernhof, Gutach
•Sommerrodelbahn, Gutach To begin Day 2, we took the hike up the Triberg waterfall. Parts are stroller friendly, for those with little ones. While the ascent can be steep, the first part is paved and there are handrails. Once you get to the first level, there are photo ops galore. Those who don't want to go any further can sit and enjoy the beautiful scenery.
Next, we drove to Gutach and the
Open Air Museum. It is a collection of old Black Forest farm buildings that gives one a sense of what life was like in the Black Forest hundreds of years ago. Our children, aged 4 and 6 had a wonderful time roaming inside and out of the old farm buildings/homes. There is also a play area and a restaurant. A big bonus for us was that pets were allowed, so our dog was able to make the outing with us. We spent a few hours here and it was a big hit with both kids and adults. After the museum, we stopped to have lunch at one of the restaurants at the entrance.
After lunch, we drove just a short bit down the road to the
Sommerrodelbahn. Words can't describe how much fun this was! I'll admit that I watched my husband take our two kids down 4 times before I was brave enough to try it myself. Now, I'm kicking myself - it was so much fun! I'd go back just to ride the rodelbahn again!
After the rodelbahn, we drove back to Triberg and walked along their shops. Before entering Triberg and along the road from Gutach to Triberg is our favorite
cuckoo shop. We had to stop and show the kids the outdoor cuckoo clock...and do a bit of shopping inside!
Day 3
•Schauinsland Peak/Cable car ride After checking out, we drove down to Frieberg and to the
Schauinsland Peak and Cable Car ride. This is a 20 minute cable ride with beautiful views. The kids had great fun on the cable car, parents enjoyed the views! Once on top, there are hiking trails, a playground, and a restaurant. It was a neat way to end our trip.
