10th & 11th July 2012 – Beaune, France (French pronunciation is “bon”)
We arrived here yesterday afternoon after a 3 ½ hour train ride from Paris.
The journey down south was quite pleasant – through industrial areas, residential and rural areas.
Beaune is the wine capital of Burgundy in the Cote d’Or department in Eastern France – it is located between Paris and Geneva. There’s a good article on the town here …
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beaune The weather here is much warmer that we experienced in Paris – probably about 7 or 8C warmer, so much more pleasant.
Gail has strained her back twisting her footing on the cobble-stones of the town last night - it is not tooo bad, but she decided it would be best to take care of it today it by resting or it could end up being a 3 week+ physio saga. Not fun when lifting luggage on and off trains for another 3 weeks.
Moira and Dennis came down to Beaune today – they’re staying in Dijon, just a bit north of the town. They decided to come down south to check out the
wine district a bit more. While Gail was resting, Moira, Dennis and Steve had lunch in the town, before they left to visit a few of the wineries on the way back to Dijon. Steve did a bit more exploring then returned to the hotel where Gail was sleeping.
There are lots of “caves” – ie wine cellars in the town – wine everywhere!
The ancient city walls are still in pretty good condition in places. The moat around the old city is still quite discernable, and is used for car parks, and gardens.
