The Church Noticeboard

Still indicates a shared church. Catholic panel on the left, Protestants in the middle. Shared news at the right. You’d want to get along in a community of 1200 people.

Wandering around Riquewihr

The Skyscraper, Riquewihr

This 25 metre high structure was called this as it was the tallest building in Alsace when it was built in 1561. It is actually 2 buildings with one gable and is 5 storeys high.

It’s all about the Kombi.

The Dolder

The large Belfry in the middle is Riquewihr’s emblematic monument and was built in 1291AD. It was constructed at the same time as the fortifications and was designed to be impenetrable at the time. At 25 metres high, it still maintains its medieval features and is a colourful warm end to our climb up the hill.

The Outside of the Dolder

Nothing decorative here; it’s purpose is obvious with huge gates and a drop down steel grill.

I walked past this house overgrown with ivy, and through the ancient shutters, a large TV lit up the back wall.
