Henkka and I
sporting our school uniform attire! Today Dorothee and I woke up early and we BOTH got ready for school...yes school, on Saturday. In Finland each school is sapposed to have 190 days and this year the school board at Naantali Lukio messed up and only scheduled 189 days so we have to come to school on Saturday. I had to dress up in a nice outfit with my Rotary blazer because I was scheduled to give 5 foreign exchange presentations to my peers and the public. I was also scheduled to perform in the school play at the same time, 5 performances. AHH! Leena drove us to school and I went straight to the autotorium where we were setting up for the play. We performed the play 5 times throughout the day, each performance lasting around 30 min. There were three performanced for students (split up into 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders) then two for the public. I performed twice during each performance, playing 14th-ish century music by Parcell and Handel. The play was called Agricola, about a man, Mikael Agricola, the founder of the Finnish language. It was a very funny play and even though it was in Finnish I put my own story with
the acting so I thought it was awesome! After our 4th performance a couple came up to me (wearing my rotary blazer) and said, "you must be Stephanie, we are your third host parents". I'm not going to lie, it caught me off guard, I'm sure they didnt notice, but I was a little confused. They were very nice people and they told me that they have a daughter in the 8th grade and a son in the 1st grade of lukio (I am in the 2nd grade of Lukio). They congradulated me on my performance and said they would love to meet up with me sometime before I move. (yes, I think that would be a nice idea !!!!) At the end of the day Dorothee took the bus home and Leena came and picked me up. I was so tired, I took a nap, then packed some more. We had dinner around 7 then Leena and I went up stairs and she helped me find a costume for the "Back to School" party!!! The theme is "school uniform" and of course I didn't have ANY room in my luggage to pack a costume, let alone a school unofirm!
the Boys
(left to right) Jori, Henri R. Henkka We ended up choosing a gray skirt, black polo shirt, gray vest over the polo shirt, and one of Erkki's ties. I walked over to Henkka's house at 9:30 and we walked over to the building (next to the ice skating rink) where the party was held. I loved Henkka's costume, he was wearing a pink collared shirt with the collar popped and a tie and sweater...and he had his backpack! When we got there we paid 2 euro and our schoolmates collecting money wrote a number on our hand. I was number 51, which meant I had to hang my coats and such on that hanger. After we hung up our stuff we immedietly met up with Aikka and Anssi, then we found Saija, Lotta, Hanna, Maiju, Jori, and Henri R. We went into the big "party room" and found a table. There was a DJ playing some dance music but only a few were dancing, it was still early. We chatted for a while and did funny random stuff, then one of the bands from our school started playing and Aikka dragged me up to the front of the stage and we hung out there for a while,
screaming to be heard over the music. Two of the boys in the band I knew from school, and one of them plays the trumpet in my Youth Orchestra in Raiso! Jori and Henri R. started dancing randomly around the table then finally we all got up and hit the dance floor! Henri R, is like a professional dancer or something (google- Talent Suomi, and you may see some pictures of him dancing in a big talent competition on TV), so he was busting out all these hilarious/amazing/skilled dance moves with us. We had a ton of fun dancing and laughing at everyones costumes! One boy, Mirro wore a red, plaid kilt and a vest...he looked like a teacher. After a while another band came up to play and the lead guitarist and singer Jere (we call him Core) was in the Agricola play with me earlier today. We all headbanged to their music and screamed a LOT. The party ended at midnight, but no one was tired so a bunch of us left and instead of going home we walked to Tulli's house for an "after party". Leena said it was fine for me to stay out later if
Saija
haha and her Muumi soda I was with Henkka so Anssi, Henkka, Jori and I headed to Tulli's house. We were walking and talking about random stuff like blueberry soup and hockey games. We stopped for a while to look at the stars then Maiju and Aikka caught up to us on their bikes. We stared at the stars for a while, then Jori gave me one as a present. HAHA. Aikka and Maiju were pretty beat so they went home and we all went to Tulli's. At Tulli's we danced and ate some finnish candies. (eww salmiaki). Everyone was funny. We were daning around the living room in like a conga line like thing, playing follow the leader while dancing. It was awesome. At around 2:30 Henkka, Anssi, Jori and I decided to leave. Anssi and Jori caught a ride with one of Jori's cousins and Henkka and I started walking home. When we came into town we passed the Kebab/Pizza place and saw through the window Anssi and Jori eating some Ananas Pizza (pineapple). We went in and had a slice with them then headed home.
