Once again, a heaps different type of city to Berlin, Amsterdam and London. Prague is the type of place for me, that whilst it lacks a vast amount of really significant monuments... its the kind of place you can just stroll around for and appreciate for hours.. (grr the little kid next to me in this cafe wont SHUT UP and her geeky father cant tear himself from the computer to discipline them!). Started at the Ancient Czech castle. Which is one of the few to survive damage from the second world war. There is a huge Gothic cathedral here, St Peters i think it was. Really cool, with gargoyles aplenty. As well as fantastic murals everywhere. i think the clinger is slowly getting the message, but ill need plenty of help there.
From the castle, there was beautiful views over the city. Prague is a contrast of poverty, buildings under construction, and rubble.. to cozy cobble stone streets and really impressive old structures. i wish i could share the sights with you all by uploading photos, but i still dont have that option 😞
The weather here was SCORCHING.. around about 30c and i probably reek right now.
Gothic Architecture
As you may guess, i liked this cathedral. it was an impressive display of gothic architecture. the gargoyles along the building were very cool. ive been trudging around all day in my long sleeve tshirt and backpack, unsuspecting the heatwave. Also so the monument today where two students burned themselves to unsuccessfully protest against certain government attitudes back in the sixties, as well as a walk through Wincelesas Square.
The day also included a fantastic river cruise throughout prague, given by an extremely attractive tour guide. it was a good view of the city from the river..
Finally the day was topped off by a meeting with one Peter Vojtech. Just by sheer chance, it turned out he landed in Prague at pretty much the exact time I got the coach in there with our tour group for our only day there. We spent the time grabbing a few Pilsners in some dark alley, and then some food. Followed by a walk across the main bridge in Prague and then real cutlural trip to a .. "torture museum" lol. My favourite method of torture would have to be the saw... where a person is hung upside down and sawed from crotch to neck... classy.
then it was time to say goodbye to petey, escorting him to the trainstation, so he couuld travel out to his
Homeland Voj
Voj in Prague, with his sly enthusiastic grin. families house in the country. then eventually finding members of my group again, and wandering prague some more. (and running into peters family again) im almost out of time now though, and Krona (money, yeah they dont use Euro really here in prague yet), so ill have to go. think ill use my last few pennies to grab a few drinks at the bar with my contiki group tonight. Keep on rockin in Melbourne dan, yeah walking over Hitlers death spot was interesting jay, and justin, you better win best and fairest at soccer. Im not sure how life changing these experiences these will be, but they are certainly increasing my knowledge and appreciation of very different parts of the world. Keep the messages coming 😊
