On Monday afternoon we flew from Dublin to Prague via AerLingus. AerLingus is the national Irish Airline, and it is one of the nicest low cost airlines I've flown. The flight attendants are super nice; somehow they've taken Irish hospitality and put it onto a plane.
We got into Prague that evening, and had to wait in the airport for Andy to arrive from London. However, when we finally got to the apartment, we were blown away. It was like we were in an episode of the Real World. We stayed in New Town, in Praha 5, on Plaska 12. The place was so nice. It had new fixtures, wooden beams, and very nice kitchen.
That evening Ben met us at the apartment and took us to a bar literally steps away from the flat. And the cool part was that it was underground in these old Roman vaults or something like that (I was soon to find out that everything is underground in old Roman vaults). Beer in Prague is so CHEAP! It was ridiculous, literally $1 per glass.
The bright daylight streaming out of our spotlight windows woke us up the following morning, and they continued
to wake us up for the next week because there were no curtains. For breakfast, we went to Bohemia Bagel, which was down the street and a really nice place. Pricey for Prague standards, but it was good.
Our days in Prague mostly consisted of us lounging about in the apartment, generally just relaxing. And it was nice. Tuesday evening, Ben took us to a restaurant in his neighborhood, Vinohrady. I had an omlette which was gross. I love Prague and all, and was glad that I was back, but the food still isn't that great. After dinner we went to Vinarna, which is a bar with a massive network of underground vaults. It was crazy huge, and there were many bars in multiple rooms. Then, we went to Nebe for 80's night, which was really fun. The music rocked. Revelations were made. D-rock puked. It was great.
Wednesday morning we went grocery shopping, which was good, because I'm all about saving money. Then, Derrick, Kelsy, Andy, and I went to the Museum of Communism, which was interesting, but I'm still confused about Communism. The museum is advertised to be above a McDonalds and next to a casino,
which is funny. Then we went to the Manes Gallery for an exhibit on Bata shoe advertisements and modern art. The lady at the gallery was adorable because she spoke no english, but was so nice.
That evening we went to M1, which, according to a magazine, is
the club to be in Prague because celebrities go there. It was crowded, so after a while we went to another place whose name I rogot. It was Rouge something I think, but, anyways, it had red curtains and a rotating statue of the Virgin Mary. We had fun there; I had a mojito and many a beer, and we danced the night away.
On Thursday I woke up eary and took the tram to the Tesco for more grocery shopping. The Tesco was crowded and confusing, but I managed to get what I wanted. Then, I went back and did laundry, which was hard because I wasn't sure how to work the washing machine. However, my clothes got clean! Then we went up to the Prague Castle because it was sunny and the views were pretty, and then we went to the National Museum. And even though it's the
National Museum, it wasn't that great at all. Thankfully, musuem tickets in Prague are cheap too.
For dinner we went to a "Mexican" restuarant, and I pigged out on quesadillas and nachos. It was surprisingly good. That evening we headed back to Nebe for indie/Brit pop night. It wasn't as crowded at 80's night, but it was just as fun.
On Friday we went to Kutna Hora to see the bone church, which isn't so much a church as it is a small chapel. At it was creepy, and I didn't enjoy it, but the journey was fun. We took the train from the Prague station to the town, and it was like a whirwind og communist era transportation. That Friday was Good Friday, so I went to a service in Czech, which was long yet interesting. We stayed in that evening and had a good time playing cards and drinking wine.
Saturday was my shopping day (well, it was really my spend the rest of my Czech money day because I had withdrawn a bit too much at the ATM). I got a new polo and swim trunks, and then I went to Tesco to buy supplies to help keep costs down in Italy, and I also got some Labello (in strawberry and milk&honey flavors), which made me happy. Later in the day we went to Old Town for souvenir shopping, and then we wandered into the Jewish Quarter.
That evening we went to dinner in Ben's neighborhood. This time we went to the restaurant that he originally wanted to take us to on Tuesday. It was a nice place, with good food too. Later, we ended up back in our neighborhood, and headed the Uylsses, which is the first bar we went to on Monday evening. It brought our trip to Prague round in a nice circle.
On Sunday, I headed to Easter Mass, in english (thankfully), and on my way to meet up with the rest of the group, I stopped and had a Eurodog, which is basically a hot dog except that hte bun wraps around the dog in its entirety. It was delicious. I met the group at Shakespeare cafe in Ben's neighborhood; the cafe was cute, and I wish I had more time to sit there. However, we had to say our goodbyes and before I knew it, Andy, Derrick, and I were sitting in a deserted terminal at the Prague airport waiting for our plane to Rome.
Overall, Prague was so much fun. I'm glad that I had the opportunity to go back, but I wish that the weather was a little better. Oh well. It was a nice, relaxing week and I had a blast.
