Day 35: Thursday, December 31st, 2009
Prague, Czech Republic
Not really sure what we did today (still a little late on writing this log.) I did walk from the hotel to the
Prague Train Station to buy a ticket to Nuremberg, Germany on 1/2/10. The walk wasn't that long, maybe 15 minutes, but it took me thru a part of Prague that I had no desire to see, I'll be booking a taxi to get to it, that's for sure. Plus, part of the walk was spent in a feverish sweat, so that added to the fun.
Also, today was the day I was freaking out over the hotel not having Internet so I found a Internet Cafe and got my fix for a few hours while Susan explored on her own. I was having SERIOUS doubts about this trip and was actually pricing tickets to go home. Sadly, i think a lot of the doubt was due to the fact that I didn't have access to the Internet and was therefore feeling cut off from everybody. Once I was online for a few hours, talked to a few people and got some encouragement (thank you one and all for the
emails, posts and IM's), I was feeling much better and ready to continue on.
I meet up with Susan in the evening and we head to an Italian place for dinner. I play it safe (cheese wise) and just order Spaghetti Bolognese. We start to wander around town afterwards and my stomach informs me that the only way I played it safe was with the cheese, and that the spaghetti wasn't a good idea. So, Susan wanders on her own and I head back to the hotel for a few hours. Susan joins me after about an hour and we feed our newest common addiction, West Wing. I have the first season on my computer so we've had fun catching up on that.
We head back out around 11pm to find a spot by the river to catch the fireworks. People are already shooting off fireworks themselves and bottle rockets and other scary ass ones are sometimes going up in the air, and sometimes going sideways and going straight towards people. The big moment comes and all the boats on the river (there were a lot!) start honking their horns and people on the bridges and walkways are
Fireworks over the castle.
Hard to tell with the smoke and fog though. cheering and more fireworks are being set off. We really don't see any signs of these being city-sanctioned fireworks, just the locals celebrating. We remark that we saw pictures with big fireworks being by the castle and we're disappointed that we didn't get to see that, but still had a lot of fun. Around 12:30am, the fog is quite thick and mixed with the smoke from the fireworks, visibility is quite low. We are frozen enough at that point and decide to call it a night.
Happy 2010 everyone!
