Lido
The sunset overlooking Venice from Lido we made it to venice safely after our 30 hour ferry...so heres the breakdown. we arrived at the ferry terminal nice and early so that we could get on the ship early to get a cabin...to avoid sleeping on the floor. we got on the ferry and we bombarded by crazy greeks....they followed us around telling us that we weren't allowed in certain places because all we had were deck passage tickets...all we were trying to do was get to reception so that we could upgrade to a room....we finally made it to reception and they refused to help us, telling us that they weren't sure if they had an open room...and wouldn't know until 10am the next morning. so we slept on the floor of a ferry. well...not really slept because that was impossible. we also got stared at ALL night by 2 really creepy german women. it was cool. so the next morning we finally scored a room at about 11....not 10....and slept the rest of the day...and night til we finally arrived in venice.
so we get to venice and have to try to figure out where to catch the waterbus to get to our hotel,
Venice
Some gondolas which was on lido, a tiny island about 15 minutes by boat from venice. after wandering around with our heavy packs on...in 90 degree and incredibly humid weather, for 2 hours, we finally found the right ferry terminal....THEN.....i (tara) fall in mud...the only mud in venice....with my pack on. it was cool. let me tell you what....IT SUCKED! but it was kinda funny too. i couldn't stop laughing...as i was laying there like a turtle...go ahead, picture it...and laugh with me. it was pretty funny.
finally we made it to our B&B. it was really cute. ran by a little old couple. we fell in love with the island too. turns our its a beach resort. so we spent our second day there doing laundry (finally...after about a month, yes, we know, gross) and lounging on the beach getting tan. it was amazing. the first day we just wandered around venice trying to avoid VHSers (those jerks with the video cameras who stand in the middle of a crowded walkway and VHS...are they really going to watch that when they get home?) and crowds of tourists. our last day there we did some sightseeing. checked out the church in
Piegons
We hate pigeons. gross St. Marks Square. its really pretty...we'll post pics when we get to a computer with a usb port. it was a nice stay. definately glad we stayed on lido. i'm discovering more and more how much i hate tourists...even if i am one.
yesterday was the longest day of my life. we left our hotel on lido at about 7am to catch the boat to the train station to head to vienna. our train wasn't until 8:45, but we wanted to leave early just in case. we didn't get to the train station until just after 8. hopped on our train and chilled til it finally started to move. we were in a little compartment with a way older couple who were trying to get to budapest. after a little while we realized that there was no AC. it was really hot...and everyone was sweaty and cranky...and starting to strip down...lots and lots of half naked old guys. it was gross....THEN...we hit a storm about half hour away from vienna...a crazy lighening and thunder storm with hail the size of ping pong balls. it was scary. so the train stopped in the middle of nowhere for over an hour.
Tara
Tara in front of the Grand Canal it finallz started moving again. about 30 seconds later the hail started again. the train stopped again. it finally started moving again, but in the WRONG direction. we went back to last train station...a tiny one called Gumplesteinhof, or something like that. we sat on the train without AC for another half hour, until finally someone came on and started yelling something in german...and everyone started getting off the train, so we followed. we heard someone say that lightening had struck the train track and shortcircuited it. they we sending for 6 buses to take everyone to vienna. one bus showed up...then another 20 minutes later...and another 20 minutes after that....finally 2 buses came at a time...than 2 more. we made it on the last one. the buses dumped all of us off at another tiny train station ourside of vienna, withour any directions at all. we were all clueless. finally some nice man told us all to get on a train...the right one, thank goodness, and we arrived in vienna at about 9pm...4 hours later than we were supposed to. it was sweet.
BUT....we made it!! and without me freaking out. you all had better be proud of
Ferry ride
