When I woke in the morning and went to look out at the view from my balcony I found myself standing in the middle of a snow squall. As I stood out there gazing up at the Alps towering above us a local train flashed past less than 100 yards from the hotel. If any trains went by last night, I never heard them. Cassie had had enough of my snoring and slept in Grandma’s and Gail’s room. It took f... Read Full Entry

Pillboxes?

As we drove through this extremely narrow area of the Southbound road, we spotted these concrete buildings built into the sheer cliffs. I assume they served some sort of military function in this easily defendable section, but whether they are World War II eras or newer I have no idea.
Werfen CastleWerfen Castle
Werfen Castle

Maybe my favorite castle in Europe. This place is the most imposing location you can have. I guess that's why it was the centerpiece of "Where Eagels Dare".

Try as we might we couldn't determine how one gets up to the castle. It looks like there was once cable car access, but it seems to be gone now. Most likely there's a nice easy driveway on the opposite side.

Momentary Clearing of the Heavens

This was about the best glimpse we got all day of the Alps. It's hard to believe they are much higher in Switzerland and France.

After a very short drive through the virtually non-existant downtown of Werfen village, we stopped for one last look back at the castle. This is the South side of the fortress.

I really like the next little town we came to. I was too busy trying to make my way through the narrow streets to take any photos but Gail snapped this as we were leaving.

There was some sort of event occuring here as we drove through town. By the time we got this close to the jump whatever was going on had ended. Since the higher hill on the left actually has snow on it I assume it's where the competition took place.

Without a tripod it was tough getting night pictures. This one came out better than most I took. That's the Hohensalburg Fortress in the distance.

Waiting for Good Dough

Cassie waited patiently for dinner for as long as she could then reached into the bread basket for a roll which we then had to pay extra for. In this part of Europe restaurants often have a basket of bread sitting on the table. If you take a piece they add it to the price of your meal. Obviously they are targetting the dumb American tourists that don't know any better. The Germans and Austrians are sneaky that way

This was the best of a bad lot of pictures we took of our dinner. Believe me, it looked much better than it appears in this blurry photo. And it tasted even better than that.

This was the delicious souffle we ordered and shared for dessert. Even better than ice cream.
