Well Austria is certainly a little chillier than Italy! We got very excited on the train with all the snow everywhere but by the time we arrived in Salzburg it was all gone :-( Never mind, Salzburg had a great Christmas atmosphere with markets and outdoor ice skating so we spent our time wandering around checking out all the decorations. The markets are also full of special Christmas punch and glüwein, a sort of hot mulled red wine, and there were people drinking throughout the markets.

One of the big thing of course about being in Austria was the Wiener Schnitzels, Nick was in heaven, and initially planned to have one every day! The other thing was the beer halls. Following the map we found the street and the entrance, however the lack of noise made us question whether we were indeed in the right place. Walking down the stairs and around the corner the noise gradually became louder until we were in the middle of about 4 halls. There were heaps of people of all ages, from the youngest babies to the gangs of grand parents around! The choice was basically beer, beer or beer, with the only decision

The obscure door to the hidden beer hall which Nick very much enjoyed
being whether to have the half litre or one litre stein. I wussed out and went for a coke, however Nick enjoyed a few steins, i´ll let him tell you what size they were!

There is a great fortress on a hill above Salzburg and one of the nicest things about it was the funicular to the top was open (everywhere we have been the funicular has been closed and we have had to walk up hills).Inside were a couple of museums, including a bizarre toture room where for once I was glad I can´t read German...

That´s it from here, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone!!! Thinking of you all and can´t wait to catch up when we´re back.

love lise and nick xx
