Churches and Weddings in Negril
Jamaica has been named the country with the highest rate of churches per square mile. Negril alone is home to at least ten places of worship. During your vacation you're likely to find a lively church with friendly locals who will offer to show you around and give suggestions and advice to help make your trip memorable.
While churches and other establishments don't have an actual street address and buildings are not numbered, Negril is a small town. Hop into any taxi and they'll know exactly where the churches are located. If you request a "charter," the charge will be around $5.00 to any location on the beach road or West End road, regardless of the number of passengers. If you simply hop into a taxi headed in your direction that may already have or pick up other passengers, the fee is J50, or less than $1.00.
Like most services, other than The Seventh Day Adventists which meet on Saturday, meet every Sunday at 10:00 or 11:00am, but on any given day you'll find a mid-week service, Bible study or choir practice. Closed AA 12 Step meetings (Mon, Wed, Thur, 6:00pm,) are held at Mart Gates of Heaven Catholic church on the beach road.
Negril is famous as one of the most romantic settings for weddings and honeymoons, and most resorts have an all-inclusive package including a minister, floral arrangements, seafood dinners and a magnificent sunset.
When planning your wedding, contact the hotel to find out what might be included, and to request the required application in advance of your arrival. To apply for a marriage license, call the Ministry of National Security at 1-876-906-4909. A minimum stay of 48 hours is necessary before applying for the license, and once the application is completed the wait is approximately another 24 hours. The usual documents are required; proof of Citizenship, birth certificate, proof of divorce or death certificate for widows and widowers when necessary, and written parental consent for those under the age of 21. There is no blood test required, but for people having a romantic whirlwind holiday affair, you might think twice about getting checked for STD's. The cost for a license is about $80.00, but all-inclusives resorts that plan all of the details for you can vary greatly, so check around. There are non-denominational Marriage Officers who can officiate and can provide witnesses if you do not have your own. The cost is anywhere between $50.00 and $250.00 U.S.
One other detail to consider when planning a wedding on the beach is the weather. Except for a brief rainy season, the weather year-round is usually between 80-90 degrees; perfect, except when an elaborate gown, tuxes and satin bridesmaid dresses will be worn. If wedding outfit fabrics are not condusive to the outdoor beach weddings, consider having an indoor, air-conditioned ceremony with a reception on the beach. That way your vows won't have competition from the intensely beautiful sunset.
Normally I would never suggest staying at an all-inclusive resort for a vacation when traveling on a budget, but having a hotel take care of every detail; floral arrangements, music, catering, (especially when food and drinks are unlimited) rather than having months of stress and ending up having a Bridezilla wedding, contact the various hotels and ask what their wedding packages include.
Whatever you decide, getting married in Jamaica is sure to be an unforgettable affair.
