Cuba

Hallo Ihr Lieben!

Ja, ja! Es ist wirklich eine Weile her, dass wir uns gemeldet haben. Aber wie wir ja gesagt und mittlerweile auch erlebt haben, war und ist es auf Kuba nicht ganz so einfach eine funktionierende (schnelle) Internetverbindung zu finden!!! Jetzt sind wir aber in Argentinien (nachdem wir ein paar Tage in Mexiko verbracht haben) und es ist uns moeglich Euch von unserer wirklich tollen Zeit - hauptsaechlich zusammen mit Steffi - auf Kuba zu berichten!!!

Also, schon einmal vorne weg: Kuba ist fantastisch! Die Landschaften sind unglaublich; die Leute sind super klasse; das Essen ist toll (solange man in "Casa Particulares" - Privatunterkuenften bleibt) und das Wetter ist unschlagbar!! Ihr seht, wir hatten eine wirklich tolle Zeit!

Dann lasst uns doch mal anfangen!!

Havanna
Wir sind schon ein paar Tage vor Steffi auf Kuba gelandet. Und haben uns spontan entschieden, die Zeit in Havanna zu verbringen und nicht schon vorher herumzureisen. War am Ende auch das Sinnvollste, weil es an den ersten Tagen sowieso die ganze Zeit geregnet hat :-( Wir haben die Zeit trotzdem genutzt und sind viel herumgelaufen und haben die Stadt erobert!

Havanna ist toll! Die Stadt lebt einfach von ihrer Atmosphaere und ihren Menschen! Auch wenn man in die heruntergekommenen Ecken kommt, spuert man trotzdem die Lebensfreude, die den Menschen hier irgendwie mit in die Wiege gelegt wird. Einfach toll!
Wir haben unglaublich viele nette Menschen kennengelernt - Touristen wie auch Einheimische! (Das lag wahrscheinlich an den hauefigen "Bar"-Besuchen waehrend der Regenschauer :-) Es ist einfach toll, wie offen Kubaner auf einen zugehen! Es macht einfach Spass mit Ihnen zu quatschen - mit Haenden und Fuessen!!

Als Steffi dann ankam, haben wir uns gemeinsam noch die Haupt-Sehenswuerdigkeiten angeschaut:
- die Altstadt (mittlerweile super schoen restauriert)
- das Capitol
- den Malecon (beruehmte Promenade von Havanna)

Wir haben dann gemeinsam entschieden, Kuba mit einem Mietauto zu erschliessen. Und um es vorne weg zu schicken, es ist super klasse, weil man viel sieht!!! Es ist aber auch nicht immer ganz einfach. Aber dazu spaeter!!!

Cienfuegos
Am naechsten Morgen ging es dann los! Wir wollten nach Cienfuegos (suedoestl. von Havanna)! Und schon in Havanna haben wir erfahren, was es so schwer macht, mit einem Mietauto zu fahren: Die Kubaner haben uerberhaupt keine Beschilderung an den Strassen!! Und das heisst wirklich ueberhaupt keine - keine Richtungsangaben, keine Ausfahrten, kein Garnix!!! Aber mit freundlichem Fragen - auch auf der Autobahn - dem Lesen des Sonnenstandes (!!!) sowie der Zuhilfenahme der Kilometerangaben auf der Karte kommt man dann doch irgendwann an!!! Es ist definitiv eine Erfahrung wert :-)

Lange Rede kurzer Sinn: Wir sind ueber die beruehmte "Schweinebucht" (Die muss man uebrigens nicht unbedingt gesehen haben!) gut nach Cienfuegos gekommen und haben eine super tolle "Casa Particulares" gefunden!!
Die Familie war super lieb, es gab phantastisches Essen (Hummer, Shrimps - mehr als wir essen konnten) und tolle Zimmer!
Wir sind dann insgesamt 3 Naechte geblieben und haben uns Cienfuegos angeschaut und einen Tagesausflug nach Trinidad gemacht.

Cienfuegos ist ein suesses, kleines Staedchen, das direkt an einer schoenen Bucht liegt (Eine der groessten natuerlichen Buchten der Welt). Am zweiten Tag haben wir es uns auch direkt erlaufen. Hat Spass gemacht, auch wenn es nicht die spannensten Sehenswuerdigkeiten zu bieten hat!

Trinidad
Am naechsten Tag sind wir dann nach Trinidad gefahren! Es ist eines dieser typischen karibischen Staedchen! Es ist super nett mit ganz vielen dieser bunten Haeuser! Einfach nett zum Durchschlendern! (Wir hoffen, dass die Bilder das auch zeigen!!!) Allerdings braucht man auch nicht mehr als einen halben Tag - um ehrlich zu sein! Aber lohnen tut es sich allemal!!

Vinales
Anschliessend haben wir uns dann auf den "weiten" Weg von Cienfuegos nach Vinales - im Westen von Kuba - gemacht! Das war im Ganzen schon ein Trip von 6-7 Stunden (inkl. kleiner Umwege aufgrund der fehlenden Beschilderung :-)! Aber es hat Spass gemacht, weil die Landschaft so toll war! Von Sumpflandschaft, ueber satte gruene Wiesen soweit man sehen konnte bis hin zu Regenwald!
Aber das Highlight war sicherlich die Umgebung von Vinales! Die Landschaft hier sieht aus, wie aus dem Film "Jurassic Park"! Man erwartet wirklich, dass irgendein Dinosaurier um die Ecke kommt! Eine Mischung aus Regenwald und irren Sandsteinformationen. Hoffentlich koennen die Bilder das irgendwie transportieren!!

Maria la Gorda
Nach Vinales ging es dann nach Maria la Gorda - die ersten Erholungs-Strand-Tage :-) Maria la Gorda liegt ganz im Westen von Kuba und es war ein schoener Trip bis dahin - durch gruene Tabakfelder und Berge und lange Zeit am fantastisch tuerkisfarbenen Meer entlang :-)

Auf dem Weg haben wir die Tabakplantagen von Antonio Robaina besichtigt und eine Tour durch die Plantage mit Erklaerungen ueber die Herstellung von Zigarren gemacht. Und natuerlich haben wir auch ein paar der beruehmten Zigarren der Marke Vegas Robaina erstanden!

In Maria la Gorda angekommen, mussten wir leider in einem staatlichem Hotel einchecken, da es hier nix anderes gab - also leider auch keine Casa particulares. Na, was soll man sagen: Der Strand war fantastisch, das Meer auch, die Unterkunft war wirklich gut und wir haben uns wirklich super erholt! Das Einzige, das nicht gepasst hat, war das Essen. Aber das ist leider so bei staatlichen Hotels :-( Wahrscheinlich waren wir durch die Privatunterkuenfte auch einfach zu verwoehnt :-)

Vinales
Anschliessend ging es wieder nach Vinales - ein Zwischenstop auf unserem Weg zum zweiten Strandaufenthalt auf der "Cayo Levisa" (eine Insel nordwestlich von Havanna)!
Wie wir feststellen mussten, klappte es nur mit einer Nacht auf der Cayo Levisa, deshalb sind wir einfach etwas laenger in Vinales geblieben. Was ueberhaupt nicht schlimm war, weil unsere Unterkunft bei Nenita (Hausmama), Joel (Sohn oder so?) und Panchita (die verschmusteste Katze, die wir kennen) einfach fantastisch war. Es war, wie nach Hause kommen :-)

Um die Zeit sinnvoll zu nutzen, haben wir am zweiten Tag eine Wanderung zu einer Hoehle in der Naehe - sie hat naemlich einen natuerlichen "Swimmingpool"! Na, wie der Teufel so wollte, hat es mittendrin angefangen zu regnen, so dass saemtliche Wege ´weggeschwommen´ sind und wir auf halben Weg aufgeben mussten! Wir kamen voellig verdreckt und nass "nach Hause"! Aber der Empfang (nachdem die ersten Lachanfaelle ueber unser Aussehen vorbei waren :-) war einfach so herzlich (sie haben unsere Klamotten gewaschen, unsere Schuhe geputzt und uns Popkorn zur Beruhigung gegeben :-), dass alles bald vergessen war.

Cayo Levisa
Cayo Levisa ist eine super kleine Insel nordwestlich von Havanna! Auch hier gibt es nur ein staatliches Hotel und sonst garnix! Wie schon in Maria la Gorda ist die Anlage toll und auch der Strand ist fantastisch! Leider hatten wir etwas Pech mit dem Wetter (So ist das leider, wenn die Regenzeit anfaengt!). Aber von ein paar Stunden Regen haben wir uns auch nicht unterkriegen lassen. Wir haben einfach viel gequatscht, Karten gespielt und den ein oder anderen Mojito getrunken! So vergeht die Zeit auch :-) Leider war das Essen mal wieder nicht so wirklich ueberzeugend, um es mal freundlich auszudruecken! (Wer also nach Kuba will: Uebernachtet in Casa Particulares und esst entweder dort oder in nicht staatlichen Restaurants!!! Das ist das Beste, das man machen kann! Wirklich!)

Havanna
Weil Steffi am Freitag Abend leider wieder nach Genf fliegen musste :-(, sind wir Donnerstag Abend zurueck nach Havanna gefahren. Leider ging es Steffi zu allem Ueberfluss nicht gut. Der Magen hat rebelliert! Deshalb war der letzte gemeinsame Abend leider nicht so, wie wir ihn uns alle erwuenscht hatten :-(

Am naechsten Tag ging es ihr, Gott sei Dank, besser und wir sind noch ein bisschen durch Havanna gelaufen - Shopping! Ausserdem wollten wir noch unseren Flug zur Isla de la Juventud buchen. Da wollten wir die letzten Tage noch mit Tauchen verbringen. Leider waren alle Fluege ausgebucht, so dass wir uns spontan entschieden haben, fuer ein paar Tage nach Mexiko zu fliegen, um dort tauchen zu gehen!!

So, das war es eigentlich von Kuba! Steffi ist mittlerweile wieder gut in Genf angekommen und wir haben unsere Zeit in Mexiko beim Tauchen und am Strand genossen!! Wir hoffen, wir konnten unsere Begeisterung fuer Kuba ein bisschen rueber bringen! Und wir koennen nur jedem empfehlen, mal nach Kuba zu fahren. Vor allen Dingen solange "Fidel" noch da ist. Wer weiss, was sich anschliessend so alles aendert!!! :-) Es ist ein Land, das wirklich Spass macht!!!

Wie gesagt, Mexiko liegt bereits hinter uns und wir sind mittlerweile in Buenos Aires angekommen. Argentinien ist leider unsere letzte Station und wir muessen uns langsam an den Gedanken unserer Rueckkehr nach Genf gewoehnen :-(

Hi everybody!

It has been a while since our last entry, but as we told you before that it might be difficult to find a decent internet cafe in Cuba (and by now we can confirm this)!! By now we are in Argentina (after we spent a couple of days in Mexico) and here it is much easier to update our blog and to tell you about our fantastic time in Cuba - most of it together with Steffi!!!

We can already tell you before we tell you more that Cuba is fantastic!! The landscape is unbelievable, people are super friendly, the (sea)food is fantastic - as long as you stay in a private 'casa particulares'- and the weather is great!! You can tell we have had a great time!

OK, now we can start!!

Havanna
We arrived a couple of days before Steffi in Cuba and we spontaneously decided to stay these days in Havanna and not to start travelling around without her. In the end it turned out to be the right decision as it rained heavily for two days :-( and there's much more to do in Havanna than anywhere else in Cuba if it is raining! We still had a great time wondering and walking around and discovering the city!

Havanna is really great!! The atmosphere and the people are just fantastic and make the city a unique place! Even if you are in the real local and worn down neighbourhoods you can still feel the vitality and the joy that all people here seem to be grown up with. Really amazing! We have met many, many nice people - tourists and locals - probably because we 'had' to go to many bars during the heavy rainshowers :-) It is really great how Cubans approach you and it is a lot of fun to talk to them - with basic Spanish and hands and feet!

Once Steffi had arrived in Havanna we went to the main sights together:
- Habana vieja (more or less fully restored)
- the Capitol
- and the Malecon (famous promenade in Havanna)

We then decided to discover Cuba by car and rented a car for the next 10 days. We can already say that this was a great and unique experience, because you can see much more if you are travelling independently!!! But it is also not always easy - more about that later!

Cienfuegos
Early the next morning we started and went to Cienfuegos (south-east of Havanna)! Already in Havanna we experienced what makes it so difficult to drive around in a car in Cuba: In Cuba there are basically no street signs anywhere! And that really means no signs anywhere - no signs at exits, no directions, nothing!!! But with a lot of friendly questions - also on the highway - the help of the sun (!!) and the street map you can manage to arrive at your destination!! It is definitely worth the experience :-)

To make a long story short: We started our trip in Havanna and drove past the famous 'bay of pigs' (not really worth seeing!) and continued along the coast until we reached Cienfuegos. Once arrived, we found a great 'Casa particulares'! The family was very amiable, the food was sensational (prawns and lobster - more than we could eat) and very nice rooms. In total we stayed for 3 nights, enjoyed Cienfuegos and a day trip to Trinidad!

Cienfuegos is a cute little town, located directly at a very nice bay (one of the biggest natural bays in the world). We spent the second day walking through Cienfuegos, enjoying the view of the bay. We had a fun time although Cienfuegos does not offer many important historical sights.

Trinidad
The next day we went on our day trip to Trinidad! It is one of these typical Caribbean towns - lots of coloured houses and just very beautiful! A great place to stroll around and breath the 'Caribbean air' (we hope that our pictures give a good impression of it!). But to be honest a day trip is enough for Trinidad. It is a great and beautiful place but also very touristy!

Vinales
The next morning we started our 'long'trip from Cienfuegos to Vinales - in the western part of Cuba! This was in total a trip of 6-7 hours (incl. some detours because of missing signs :-), but it was still a lot of fun because we drove through the great countryside of Cuba! We saw everything from swamps, green grasland to tropical rain forests.

The final highlight of the trip was definitely the 'Valle de Vinales'! The scenery here reminds you of the movie 'Jurassic Park'! Very surreal - you expect dinosaurs to come around the corner every minute! It is a mixture of a tropical rain forest and bizarre sandstone formations. Hopefully our pictures can transport some of those feelings!

Maria la Gorda
Our next stop was Maria la Gorda at the western tip of Cuba - the first relaxing beach days :-) It was a beautiful trip driving through tabacco fields (close to Pinar del Rio) and along the fantastic turquoise Caribbean sea :-)

On our way to Maria la Gorda we visited the tabacco plantation of Antonio Robaina. We did a tour through the plantations and learned how tobacco is grown and cigars are manufactured. Obviously we also bought some famous Vegas Robaina cigars.

Finally we arrived in Maria la Gorda where we had to stay in a state owned hotel. It is the only place around therefore we did not have a choice and had to check in. What can we say: The beach and the Caribbean sea were fantastic, the cabanas were very nice and comfortable and we had a great and relaxing time!

The only bad thing about this place was the food. But that is unfortunately the standard in state owned hotels in Cuba :-( We probably got used to a different standard through our great experiences in Casa particulares, where we got truly pampered :-)


Vinales
Afterwards we went back to Vinales - a stopover on our way to our second beach destination, the 'Cayo Levisa' (a small island north west of Havanna)!

Unfortunately we only managed to get a room for one night on the Cayo Levisa (we were just too late), therefore we stayed one more night in Vinales. This was definitely not a bad thing because our rooms at Nenita's casa and the company of Nenita (the mamita), Joel (probably her son or nephew) and Panchita (certainly the most cuddly cat in the world) was really fantastic. It was like coming home :-)

To make the best of our time we went on a trekking trip during our second day in Vinales. We planed to go to one of the famous caves in the surrounding of Vinales, which has a natural 'whirlpool'! Shortly after we left 'home'it started to rain heavily and most of the mud streets changed to little 'rivers'within minutes. There was simply no way through and we had to return 'home' before reaching the cave!

We arrived completely soaking wet and covered with mud and everybody at Nenita's casa (friends and family) started to laugh at us and we had to join them :-). Nenita and Joel needed a couple of minutes to regain control, but once they did, they took our clothes and shoes and washed everything for us. They also made some popcorn for us and we soon stopped thinking about our rainy experience.


Cayo Levisa
Cayo Levisa is a very small island north west of Havanna! As in Maria la Gorda you only have one state owned hotel and nothing else! The hotel and the cabanas are great and the beach is fantastic. Unfortunately we had some bad luck with the weather, but that is probably normal if you are travelling in the beginning of the rainy season.

But a couple of hours of rain did not spoil the fun. We spent the time playing cards, talking and drinking the one or the other mojito! That's definitely a good way to spend your time :-) As we told you before, state owned hotels have very bad kitchens and this is true for Cayo Levisa as well! In case you are going to Cuba, our advice is to stay in casa particulares where ever possible - and you should also eat here and not in a state owned restaurant!! It is really, really the best thing you can do!

Havanna
Because Steffi had to fly back to Geneva on Friday evening :-( we went back to Havanna on Thursday evening. On top of having her last days in Cuba Steffi also had some stomach problems and did not feel too well. Unfortunately our last night was therefore not exactly how we planed it :-(

At least Steffi felt better the next day and we spent the day walking through Havanna buying some souvenirs! We also wanted to book our flight to the Isla de la Juventud, where we wanted to spend our last days in Cuba while diving at Punto Frances. Because we were too late again, we did not get tickets and spontaneously changed our plans and went for 4 days to Mexico to dive in Playa del Carmen/Cenotes.

OK, that´s mainly it from Cuba! Steffi is already back in Geneva and we enjoyed our short trip to Mexico (more about Mexico in a separate journal)! We hope you could feel our enthusiasm and excitment about Cuba and we could explain a little bit why we liked it so much! We definitely recommend going to Cuba for a couple of weeks, especially while ´Fidel´is still in ´charge´! Who knows what will happen afterwards and how things might change :-) It´s a great country that provides a lot of joy and fun!!!

As already mentioned we spent a couple of days in Mexico and arrived by now in Buenos Aires! Argentina is the last country we will visit on our trip and we have to get used to the idea of returning to Switzerland :-(

We know that we promised some pictures in the text but unfortunately we ´lost´our memory stick with all pictures from Cuba and Mexico in Buenos Aires... :-( Therefore this time we won´t have any pictures but we hope you still had some fun reading about Cuba!!!

Oh no, this is really a shame, that you lost all nice pictures of Cuba and Mexico - specially the pictures of us after our nice trecking trip in Vinales :-) And I have to say - all what they describe is right - it was a perfect vacation and we had a lot of fun! If somebody is interested in Cuba pics, just let me know, as I have as well some (330 ....). See you soon steffi
