Today I visited Turubari Park where I went zip lining through the canopy. It was a lot of fun, but first I need to explain the ridiculousness of our trip up to the park.
The road from San Jose was
very curvy. While our program directors had warned us about it, I was not expecting it as bad as it was. To get a handle on it, think about Badger Hill and lengthen it by 50 km or so and more narrow with people walking and cycling on the sides. There were so many times I thought the bus was going to hit the oncoming car or people. I didn't even make it out of the San Jose metropolitan area before I started to feel queazy. I even took dramamine. So I now have an assigned seat at the very front of the bus for all the excursions. I will say the scenery was beautiful going through the mountains, when I was able to actually look out the windows.
Once we got to Turubari, it was very hot. I was not expecting the weather to be so hot. After all the forms were filled out and we got our
gear, it was time to go on the zip line. By this time, I was starting to freak out a little. It didn't help when we went to the first tower and I was near the very end of the line. I was actually the last CEA student to go. When it was finally my turn, I was pretty freaked out. The initial sitting the harness was probably the hardest and the length of the first line also made it difficult. But I was proud of myself for not screaming 😊
After the first line was done with, the others were a lot more fun. I was able to look around more and take in the gorgeous scenery. The only other bump in the road was one of the lines actually bounced and it felt like you were almost weightless. The other bad part was the high staircase (if you want to call it that) to the final tower. The steps were grate-like and pretty far apart. Since I am pretty clumsy, climbing the stairs was a challenge and I had to use both hands on the rails. But, the stairway was worth it, because the final line was
700 m and I had a beautiful view of the canopy.
Once we got off the zip line, we took a gondola back up to the top. Four other tourists got off of our gondola and we started to talk with them and almost missed our gondola! We had to fun and jump into it before the door closed. the view was breathtaking from the gondola.
After getting back up to the top, we had a tasty lunch. We even got mashed potatoes which tasted amazing after eating so much rice over the past week. We then hopped on the bus for the ride hope. I am very thankful I was able to sleep most of the way back to San Jose. It made the trip pass by much quicker and less sick feeling. After getting home, I practically passed out, as did nearly everyone else in the house. It was a pretty good nap!
I have more pictures up on flickr from Turubari, so check them out. Tomorrow we visit Irazu, so watch for more pictures tomorrow!
