Geo: -28.5208, 28.6026DH (where the 'D' stands for Don't Put Us In Danger) was already a bit antsy about this leg of our journey so the Zebra Campervan Rental folks weren't helping me persuade DH that a magical adventure lay ahead by giving us the saddest looking 4 wheeled campervan (hereafter known as the Wounded Zebra) one might ever see. We had such a good time touring New Zealand and Australia in a campervan that when the opportunity to do the same thing in South Africa presented itself, I jumped at it. DH, on the other hand, having been fed a steady diet of horror stories about South Africa, immediately started researching the soaring crime stats and discovered, much to her dismay, that car jacking is one of the few growth industries in SA. She was ... read more

Africa » Madagascar September 2nd 2014

Geo: -23.3549, 43.6761You could probably spend months/years wandering the wilds of Madagascar and not see all of the unique species on offer here (90 percent of all plant and animal species found in Madagascar are endemic). As part of the world's loudest bus tour, we never did get to see the Giraffe Weevil, the Comet Moth (largest in the world), the Tomato Frog, Aye-Aye Lemurs, Flat-Tailed Geckos (impossible to spot since they look like a dead leaf), Streaked or Aquatic Tenrecs, Madagascan Land Crab, and a whole lot more star attractions. We did manage to track down the Hissing Cockroaches, King Crickets (much like DH, they go into a Kung Fu stance when threatened), a Hedgehog Tenrec, a Radiated Tortoise, a Wolf Spider and more. Even the trees and forests are unique. The Baobab Tree is ... read more

Geo: -22.4123, 46.1137If lemurs are the stars of Madagascar, then Ring Tails are the stars of the lemur family. Part of that is very likely due to their staring role in the Madagascar cartoon movie series (not having had the pleasure of a tantrum that persists until a tiny human is allowed to watch their cartoon for the 70th time, we haven't seen this movie yet), but a bigger part is their patience with the Lemur Paparazzi that visit from all corners of the planet. Unlike most other lemurs that are far more comfortable in the trees (making photos more challenging), the Ring Tailed Lemur spends about a third of its time on the ground in wide open spaces. And just in case you miss the first sighting, the troops average about 15 members so another ... read more

Geo: -21.25, 47.45We're still cleaning the Lemur footprints off of our clothing and getting ready for our next encounters, but, as a form of personal stress relief, I need to address the trials and tribulations of bus touring. As with most of these off-the-beaten path trips, many of our fellow travelers are hardcore- there's The Gang Of Six (far flung friends who frequently get together for trips like this in order to sing Top 10 songs from the seventies and pose for jumping photos), a Dude from Salt Lake City (didn't know you were allowed to be a dude in Utah), a couple from Regina (who picked up a stomach bug on the second day and gave new meaning to the word perseverance on a bus tour although they missed out on many of the trip ... read more

Geo: -18.9427, 48.4085The country of Madagascar (or as Deb P might say "why are they mad at Gascar?"), is another of those countries that remains somewhat off the beaten path. This is something of a surprise given the success of the cartoon Madagascar movies and the latest IMAX Island of Lemurs release- things like that normally provide a jolt to any countries tourism. Just the opposite has happened in Madagascar as the French Government has put in place a travel ban because a vigilante mob in Nosy Be burned two tourists alive that they suspected were pedophiles involved in the killing of a local 8 year old boy (the Police have since stated that there was no evidence that the pair were involved in the boys death and that the boy may have simply drowned- two ... read more

Geo: -24.6919, 31.7107Before going to Kruger, we had heard that game viewing could be a bit hit and miss because you are required to stay on the roads and the park can be overgrown. Our Kruger experience turned out to be fabulous and we saw much more than we had hoped for but we had already hedged our bets by booking a few days in one of the more famous private game reserves adjacent to Kruger - Sabi Sands. These reserves are home to some of the most luxurious and expensive lodges in Africa. We picked a mid-range option as I didn't want the Princess exposed to the pampering that goes on in some of these African Shangri-La's (how do I get DH back in a campervan if she's gets used to pedicures before breakfast?). That ... read more

Geo: -23.926, 31.4209She-who-must-be-obeyed decided that we had gone far too long between safaris, and given that we hadn't yet visited the country (South Africa) that is home to one of the most famous national parks in the world (Kruger), it was time to figure out how to make that happen. At a size roughly the same as the entire country of Israel, Kruger is not to be taken lightly so we made arrangements for a guide to chauffeur the Princess and myself around for the days we were going to be there. Kruger is one of a number of parks in South Africa that allows, and almost encourages self-drives, but our past experience has been that the guides/trackers have an uncanny knack for spotting critters that we would have zipped right by (and after spotting a ... read more

Middle East » United Arab Emirates » Dubai August 11th 2014

Geo: 25.27, 55.33Dubai is one strange city. Good strange or bad strange seems to depend on your mood and what you're looking at. Because of oil revenues, a large modern city exists where none should exist- on the edge of an Arabian desert. And because Dubai is the one city state within the UAE that is actually running out of oil, it is rapidly trying to diversify into a financial centre, airline hub, tech centre, and just about anything else it thinks might guarantee the future of Dubai citizens who live simply to shop. And if you're building a city that is looking to attract attention, you will need to veer off the path of bland and ordinary (hello Toronto), and step outside the box. Dubai steps so ... read more

Europe » Russia August 6th 2014

Geo: 59.939, 30.3158As a final stop, our boat with it's very non-Russian, Russian crew (ie smiling & friendly) pulled into port and effectively became a floating hotel for the four days we were going to be in St Petersburg (formerly Leningrad). I don't know if St Petes is the most heavily renovated city in world history but it has to be close. The tragic siege of the city by Nazi Germany during World War II left the place pulverized- it is clear that Hitler's intention was to utterly destroy the city and its population. According to a directive sent to the German Army Group North, "After the defeat of Soviet Russia there can be no interest in the continued existence of this large urban center. Following the city's encirclement, requests for surrender negotiations shall be denied, ... read more

Europe » Russia August 1st 2014

Geo: 61.794, 34.3462When trying to cobble together the logistics for the trip to Russia, I was left with the challenge of connecting two must-see places, Moscow and St Petersburg, and, although there are quite a few options, the one that stood out on Google was a river cruise between the two cities. River cruising seems to be a bit of thing these days but it does appeal to an older crowd so we weren't sure what we were getting into (the company we booked with prided itself on putting together groups of older like-minded Americans so it was a bit of an ordeal just to book passage- our home address was listed as Boston, Mass and we were never issued the name badges, most of them gold, that everyone else was sporting). After boarding we knew ... read more
