April 26, 2011 – Sandy Beach Harbor, Anguilla We arrived in Aguilla the Saturday before Easter Sunday, April 23, 2011. After anchoring in Sandy beach harbor, 4-8 took the rest of the watch again which makes a long day for us. This means our day started at 3:30am with our first watch. Then after 8am we went to all hands to prepare for our arrival. I think we must have been anchored/cleared thru customs by 1 or 2. The rest of the watches jumped for shore while the 4-8 stayed to do topsides (riding in a little skiff around the boat using “ospho”-osphoric acid- to remove rust stains and fresh water rinsing afterward then doing any touch up paint jobs to the sides of the ship and repainting the water line). Luckily they did the big ... read more

The week in Antigua came and went like a whirlwind in the blink of an eye. We arrived last Friday and anchored in Falmouth harbor. During quarantine, I was aloft with the rest of the ship doing harbor stows on the sails when the arrival of our skiff brought a very familiar person. Looking down, all I saw was a head of silver followed by the flash of the brightest smile I’ve seen in a while. Without boring you with all the gooey details, I instantly lost all concentration on whatever task I was doing (something about putting a gasket on the upper topsail) and quickly ran down the ratlines for a long awaited reunion. It was so great to not only see a familiar face, but for it to be Frank! He managed to hop ... read more

April 5th, 2011 It’s been a month since my last entry. St. Helena has come and gone since last entry. The island is beautiful and I could have easily spent more time there exploring it. We got 1 ½ days off while there: one spent on a day long tour of the island which included seeing Napolean’s place of residence and tomb and other points of interest. The island is lush and green with tropical flowers, lots of flax, incredibly friendly and kind people who call themselves “saints” and they have a local language called “saints”. But their English is Britishly polite (everyone says ‘hi ‘ to each other, even drivers in cars as they pass) and most of them have warm sun-darkened skin of “islanders” with a handful of fairer-skinned Europeans. The roads are mostly ... read more

Well, folks - it's been an entire week since last I posted and quite spectacular considering what I've seen, where I've been and what I've done in the last week. Last post, it was Tet, February 3rd, upon our return from Halong Bay to Hanoi, Vietnam. We had one day left to spend in Vietnam and as was much was closed due to the holiday we spent it wandering about, getting spa treatments, lazying about at a cafe. Then Margot, Kim and I said our farewells to catch our flight out of Hanoi to Bangkok. We met a woman in the airport who is returning to Laos after having left 14 years ago to make a life in Florida. She became an American citizen Jan 11th and promptly got her passport so she could return. We ... read more

Today was our full day in Hanoi. Slept in til 9, I think. I headed down stairs of the new Hanoi Backpacker's hostel for the complimentary bread and jam breakfast with instant coffee/tea. Kim was my first sight as I exited the stairs and greeted her with a morning hug from behind. Then, one by one we convened around the breakfast picnic table as the intermittent morning chatter picked up. Our first order of business is to choose a Halong Bay tour. After much deliberation and pouring over details, we narrowed the tour down to 2 tours: a luxury one thru another tour company or a booze cruise thru the hostel. Alex was at the same time, thankfully, writing the 2 choices on paper to randomly pick. We picked the booze cruise – so it’s time ... read more

Greetings fom Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam :) Margot finished up our last week at the hospital. I taught the ACL protocol I was working on and 2 back evaluation/treatment presentations. Margot taught her TKA protocol. People are getting revved up for the huge Tet holiday that is coming up. We noticed this as patients started to one by one stop coming to PT as they were heading home. Monday, we had a lunar lunch with the director of the hospital and the staff of the massage clinic - we took over a long table at a nearby restaurant and had loads of food and many "mot hai ba, yo!" cheers with heinkekin (they love it here and it's the beer of choice). Needless to say, the afternoon after that was not too productive. Tuesday night, ... read more

Sat Jan 22, 2011 very early On a tour bus in Hue right now for a DMZ tour. Margot and I arrived in Hue last night after a 3 hr bus ride. It was nice to see some of the country side. It's very wet, misty, rainy - like there has been a permanent gray soft focus lense cast over everything (it's really been mostly like that since we've arrived in Da Nang). Everyone still motorbiking around - just in various colored ponchos. Lots of rice paddy fields, too - some coming right up to heir very tiny, moldy-soaked house or more like shack/hut with clothes always hung out on lines to "dry". I think perhaps I'ave adjusted to the increased moisture/always feeling wet or rather never feeling dry. How dirty everything seemed at first is seeming ... read more

Hello all . . . It's been a whole week since last I wrote. Our very limited Vietnamese vocabulary continues to slowly grow. I think we are up to 20-some words and numbers. Things have been looking promising in the languard department when margot and I finally (really it was Margot, for my own entertainment) was understood when she told the cab driver "95 Quang Trung" which is our address in vietnamese. It's taken over 2 weeks for the cab drivers to finally understand us and even this time, he hesitated and almost had us write it down (the preferred method of communicating with cab drivers here). And it certainly did get a big smile out of him - the vietnamese are very surprised and happy when they realise that we are in fact actually trying ... read more

Hello fellow blog-followers! Margot and I had a very successful morning! After observing a total knee surgery yesterday. We were able to teach/commence acute PT on 2 patients after their total knees today - Margot really saved the day as she put her expertise to work in working with the patients and educating the therapists on acute orthopedic PT therapeutic techniques. This is the first (to our knowledge) that the PT department has seen or been exposed to acute PT care so soon and functional after a total knee replacement and the patients did really well. Then, we were smart enough to run up to the surgery floor and catch the ortho surgeon and the american ortho surgeons between surguries to give them updates and recommendations to clarify the orders that are generated for the PT ... read more
