Wednesday 6 July 2022. Day 4 on the West Highland Way (WHW) from Rowardennan to Ardlui via ferry at Ardleish 14 miles by Garmin. 1598 feet Elevation gain. 11 hours walking. Ardlui our destination is in the Arrochar district of Scotland but not on the region selection list for TravelBlog. Nor is Rowardennan which is in the Stirling council. Both are shown on Google Maps in these locales. Rowardennan has the last road from the south and east into this side of the loch. All other places north and east of here on the loch are served only by boat. The main highway route A82 runs up the west side of the loch. This means it is a long way around the southern end of the loch to bring our bags up the west side to ... read more

Tuesday 5 July 2022. Day 3 on the West Highland Way (WHW) from Balmaha to Rowardennan. 8.7 miles by Garmin. 784 feet Elevation gain. 6 hours 23 minutes walking. This will be called our day of the flowers as we saw so many very minute and beautiful species. With the help of the app - SEEK - we were able to identify many of them. The Oak Tree Inn was a very nice accommodation. We are in a cabin a short walk from the reception but the lovely lady, Rosemary, helped find our bags, tote a bag and walk us to the room and then had to go back to get our key. She let us in a room which had twin beds. We quickly scarfed down the biscuits on the table with the coffee makings ... read more

Monday 4 July 2022. Day 2 on the West Highland Way (WHW) from Drymen to Balmaha. 7.8 miles by Garmin. 1043 feet Elevation gain. 5 hours 18 minutes walking. Last night we had the best night’s sleep since arriving in Scotland. Alarm woke us at 0620 to start the packing routine before breakfast at 0730. We all had our bags down for pickup and started the day’s walk by 0910. The four fast walkers took a different route from town to the trail but we all arrived at the same starting point for the WHW walk over Conic Hill and down to the scenic shores of Loch Lomond at Balmaha. The first 100 yards was through a beautiful natural foliage arbor. We were joined by several other groups of WHW walkers from the various hotels and ... read more

Sunday, 3 July 2022. Day 1 on the West Highland Way (WHW) from Milngavie to Drymen. 13.5 miles by Garmin. 658 feet elevation gain. 7 hours and 10 minutes of walking The luggage transfer service required our bags out at 0730 for pick up and transfer to our next hotel in Drymen. Greg the driver sent a brief outline of his background. He is a royal army veteran having served in both Iraq and Afghanistan. Since our CPAPs were a third piece of luggage we paid 65 GBP to have them included in our group luggage. As mentioned in an earlier blog that meant a 0530 wake up call to get everything broken down, organized and packed up so we could have the bags ready to take outside at 0730. Greg should up on the minuted. ... read more

2 July 2022, Saturday Arrived in Milngavie, the starting point for the West Highland Way. Jet-lag affects one differently on different trips. Having slept little on the flight over to Edinburgh and with a 5 hour time zone change we slept better and longer the first night than last night. Finally got to sleep about 0500 local time and woke to the alarm at 0830. Organizing and packing for the train trip took more than an hour. Have to disconnect and pack the CPAPs; get the cords and adapters for charging the cell phones, watches and computers packed in the appropriate bags or in coats to carry. Thus we only got to our breakfast at about 1000. The standard hot British breakfast consists of sausage (links and blood), ham, broiled tomato halves, hash brown potato patties, ... read more

This blog will be a synopsis of our walk of the West Highland Way in July of 2022. This was the trip planned in 2020 but delayed with COVID issues. Our group has changed over the course of the two years. My wife and I and our friends Jo Finestead and Norma Wiebe and Sandy Clements have walked the Coast to Coast and a few other treks together the last 10-15 years so we will see how age and the terrain treat us on this walk. We left our new home in San Antonio at Blue Skies of Texas, a CCRC, and traveled by car to Dallas-Ft Worth where we stayed with cousin Chuck who had hoped to make the trip but outrageously high airfares forced him to withdraw. Then on to cousins in Fairfield Bay, ... read more

22 September 2019, Sunday Day 21 on Thames Path from Greenwich to the Thames Barrier near Woolwich. 37th day of travel. 6 miles from Greenwich to the Barrier. Ah, you might have wondered why the blog entries have bogged down timewise? Well, we have had one foot in England while wrapping our brains trying to understand the complexities and perplexities of countries we have since traveled in the Middle East. To see-saw back and forth over such different areas has been mentally taxing. One day , in Morocco, I thought it might help to have my head wrapped up, so it was done in a weaving shop--sadly, it resulted in little insight into our introductions to Jordan, Dubai, Morocco and Israel whilst trying to finish up Merry Old England. Today we complete the 184 river miles ... read more

21 September 2019, Saturday Day 20 on Thames path. Putney Bridge to Greenwich, day 35 of travel The last day of summer, first day of fall or equinox is today. London promises a sunny 75 degree day. Tower Bridge to Greenwich We leave the Premiere Inn at Tower Bridge and walk towards the bridge. As one writer has said, "Tower Bridge is unashamedly Victorian Gothic in style, and inevitably attracted sneers from architectural purists. "However, the public loved the bridge, completed in 1894. We are still on the South Bank, following the river to Greenwich. We go along cobbled streets with tall warehouses ahead. We turn down Maggie Blake's Cause, commemorating a recent local activist who fought to allow access to the Thames River Path for everyone, against developers who wanted to restrict it to diners ... read more

20 September 2019, Friday Day 19 on Thames Path Putney Bridge to Southwark Bridge along the south bank of the river, day 35 of travel. Today was to be shorter but the 2 hours at and around the US Embassy added several miles, so, another 15.5 mile day. But the buildings, sites, and parks are most interesting. We enjoyed a lovely breakfast at the Premier Inn at Putney Bridge. Then we crossed over the Thames on the bridge with its ornate lamp posts to begin our walk for the day. The first building was St. Mary's Church with its history of having hosted, in 1647, the debates by Oliver Cromwell and other parliamentarians about constitutional matters. A unique candelabra from a sister Swedish church was on display. The altar is in the center so services are ... read more

19 September 2019, Thursday Kingston on Thames to Putney Bridge London day 18 of Thames Path, day 34 of travel A note about the previous blog. Harlan's brother-in-law and Bob, a friend from Anthem, have given identification to our 'oreo' cows!' They are Banded Galloways bred in Scotland. A 15.9 mile day. Left the White Hart hotel around 0800 with plans to walk to the cafe at Petersham Nursery for breakfast (Google says open at 0900). We crossed over the bridge and at the lower level of the John Lewis building we saw the archeological section of a arched roof structure of a very early 14th century merchant's house. This is the exact spot the barrel-vaulted cellar and ornate chequerboard flint and chalk walls were discovered when working in the old bridge abutments. We elected to ... read more
