Right away we get Blondie near the statue of El Cid. We were passing the Cathedral at 0800 and then took a few more photos with the morning light. The way out of Burgos leads us past the Arc of San Martin, a remnant of the old ... read more

7 September 2015, Monday It is a lazy morning and so wonderful not to have to rise, have bags down by eight, and be pounding the pavement, always heading west. While we are enjoying a delicious breakfast, Cam and Marie come by to say farewell. They are on the way to the Meseta today while we have a rest day. We will miss them as they are great fun and we have enjoyed hearing about the Calgary, Canada area. We hear from Oscar and Jonathan. They will be in Burgos today and we arrange to meet at the little chapel, Divina Pastora Assoc. for the Pilgrim's Mass. So, we decide to find a supermarket across the river. It is quite an inclusive market and we are happy to find bags of nuts and trail mix as ... read more

We start walking along the wooded valley. It is a lovely, cool, crisp morning and I have light gloves on. We descend a little into Ages and have the most wonderful breakfast. People leaving say the chocolate croissants are to die for. But we opt for the generous empanadas filled with bacon, potato and vegetables. It is the recipe of the proprietor's mother and grandmother and delicious. We also had ... read more

5 September 2015, Saturday. Stage 12, Belorado to Monasterio San Juan de Ortega GPS: 16.2 miles 5 hours 32 minutes moving. Left Casa Waslala at 0820 after custom ordered breakfast. Arrive in San Juan de Ortega at 1525, 7 hours from point to point. Fitbit: 15.17 miles, 34,650 steps, 155 floors (stairs) We leave Belorado following Paul's directions so we do not run across any wayward drunken groups. The street cleaners are already out in force and they are preparing for the big Saturday night performance. It is a beautiful day. We travel west to the foot of the Montes de Oca, formerly a wild unpopulated area and notorious for the bandits that roamed its slopes preying on pilgrims. We are headed for Monasterio San Juan de Ortega. The 400 meter gain for the day has ... read more

4 September 2015, Friday, Stage 11 Santo Domingo to Belorado GPS: 14.78 miles. 7.5 hours from Parador to Casa Waslala. Lost moving time. Fitbit: 14.13 miles, 32,246 steps, 98 stairs. After a lovely breakfast in the Santo Domingo Parador we set off. We cross over Santo Domingo's sixteen arch bridge, barely recognizable due to many modifications. At Cruz de Los Valientes, a steel cross marks the spot where a deciding fight was held between two chosen fighters, one from Granon and one from Santo Domingo. Even though Santo Domingo had an experienced fighter and he was slathered wth olive oil, the common laborer from Granon was the winner--in Medieval times, it was sometimes the custom to submit such matters to the Divine Judge on the basis He would protect the innocent party! Granon is noted for ... read more

Europe » Spain » La Rioja » San Millan de la Cogolla September 2nd 2015

2 September 2015, Wednesday-rest day in Najera and trip to San Millan and monasteries We take the regional bus up to San Millan de la Cogolia, a name given to an ensemble of a village and two monasteries. Its roots lie in the community which grew around the work of a sainted hermit named Millan (473-574) who spent his life devoted to prayer in caves in the mountainous area. Suso, Latin meaning "upwards," is the name for the older monastery, near the caves. Yuso, Latin meaning "downwards," is the name of the newer one at the bottom of the valley. The ensemble is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We have only a few pictures from this day as there is no photography allowed in Yuso and they are adamant about enforcing this rule. Suso was built ... read more

30 August 2015, Sunday, stage 7 GPS: ? August 30, Sunday. Los Arcos to Viana. Left at 7:20, arrived 12:52. Paddy's Gang It is a shame that I must abandon my pursuit of a Hemingway, look-a-like beard. But now that I have a razor and a wife who insists it only makes me look like a scruffy old man, I have shaved. What do you think? Today we travel through arable farm land with steep climbs up and down river valleys. We have found these to sometimes be very testing due to rocks that easily slide under your feet. I count three river valleys on my map but my feet insist there were five or more! We are down from our fifth floor suite, no elevator to heaven, early as I (Karen here) has been awakened. ... read more
