ICEFIELDS PARKWAY We had a good journey from Jasper to Lake Louise, along the Icefields Parkway - known as the most beautiful road in the world. It was certainly one of them with its towering rugged mountain peaks, huge deep blue and white glaciers, stunning azure lakes and dark green pine trees - all surrounded by meadows full of colourful wildflowers in pinks, reds and yellows - what more could one ask for from a vista, and this went on for 150 gorgeous miles. SO MANY GLACIERS Glaciers are formed when more snow falls from the sky than actually melts on the ground - we had never seen so many in one area as there were along the Icefields Parkway road. The Canadian Rockies comprise the Canadian segment of the North American Rocky Mountains - all ... read more

We left our lovely B&B in Clearwater and immediately missed the solitude and comfort. We had a good journey though and stopped for lunch by a river - a pleasant spot to sit and enjoy the scenery. We continued on and finally moved out of British Columbia and into Alberta. The roads were really quiet and easy to travel along with no mountainous passes and scary bends so we just sat back, relaxed and enjoyed the scenery and it was not long before we reached our next destination - Jasper National Park. Jasper is the largest National Park in Alberta, a ski resort in winter that turns into a wonderful hiking area in the summer and we were looking forward to some serious hiking. We were staying at the Mount Robson Inn which was OK but ... read more

WHISTLER On leaving Vancouver we stopped at Brandywine Falls to have a picnic lunch. This scenic waterfall with a drop of 227 feet is situated near to the town of Squamish and was perfectly situated for a break where a short walk took us to an overlook of the falls. The trail started from the parking lot, crossed a wooden bridge over the river and crossed the railway track to a small platform overlooking the gorge. What a magnificent view of the waterfall we had from here, the sun was shining and at the bottom was a perfect rainbow - a good start to our next journey. Later that day we thought we had arrived in Switzerland - but actually we were in Whistler but the mountains and area was so like some of the resorts ... read more

On disembarking from our Holland America Cruise we picked up a shuttle bus from the dock side as this was a really quick and a efficient way of getting into the city of Vancouver. The driver was pleasant and informative and gave us the low down on 'his' city - telling us where and where not to go.......... Our hotel was located in the West End area of Vancouver which was great as we could do a lot of exploring on foot as there was so much to see and do quite nearby. Within in a few minutes stroll there were restaurants, cafes, shops and grocery stores as well being a 10 minute walk away from large beaches and Stanley Park itself, the seawall, harbour and picturesque Granville Islands with its cafe culture and street markets ... read more

This is a very long blog but covers our entire Cruise from Seward to Vancouver and all our ports of call. We left Seward behind and boarded our cruise boat which was an Holland America Line ship, the MS Statendam. It was not a huge ship but still had 1500 passengers however we were to see lot of ships twice this size on our journey. We have never been on a large cruise boat before and were a little concerned that we would not like it. However our friends Bob and Elaine had done a similar cruise in Alaska and enjoyed it so we hoped we would to. The main reason we decided to take the cruise was that it was one of the easiest and cheapest ways to get into Canada from the States, our ... read more

SEWARD We just loved Seward and our hotel which was situated on the harbour had gorgeous views over the mountain tops. Settled at the head of Resurrection Bay on the Kenai Peninsula, Seward with a population of about 2500 is one of Alaska’s oldest and most scenic communities and we could not agree more. The historic downtown district was filled with quaint shops and art galleries, and of course the amazing boat harbour that is shared with humans and wildlife alike - so many bald eagles flying past us all the time. There was a free shuttle bus into town and the drivers were so happy and informative it was a pleasure to hop on board. Located at the terminus of both the Alaska Railroad and the Seward Highway as well as a Port for many ... read more

ANCHORAGE We picked up a hotel shuttle bus at the airport and gave the driver our hotel details - we were a little concerned when he said he had not heard of it! He did get us there though and it was actually really easy to find being right next to the Railway Station. We had planned this as our next journey would be by train and not plane. Before that though we had a few days in the largest city in Alaska. It was July and we were told that this was the best time to visit with good weather which it proved to be. As you would expect in the high northern latitudes, the longest days come around the summer solstice, 21 June, and they get quite short around the winter solstice, 21 December. ... read more

GUSTAVUS We were staying in the small community of Gustavus located on the north shore of the Icy Strait. With only 500 residents the village was very relaxed and friendly - in fact as you travelled around everyone would give you a nod or a wave or stop to chat. There was no crime here so there was no need of a police force. Everyone leaves their doors open day and night. One of the staff at the inn said they only drive old cars and no one would want to steal them - in any event if they did they wouldn't have anywhere to drive them to - hopefully the new car ferry connected with Juneau will not change that! The main concern for ‘car owning locals’ was loosing their car keys and not having ... read more

First of all I would like to correct the bird's name in our last blog which I incorrectly named as an Osprey when in fact it was a Peregrine Falcon - thanks SC for pointing this out and thanks for your email to - glad that you are still enjoying our blogs after all this time. I know you particularly like the bird photos but I am afraid there have not been too many recently as most of them seem to have flown the nest! It was sad to leave the Lower 48 and our ‘Eyeball van home’ but it was time to set off on yet another adventure, so we flew from San Francisco to Juneau in Alaska with a brief touch down in Seattle. Alaska only became the 49th state of the USA after ... read more

We left the scenic State of Utah and arrived back in Arizona for a short while and then back into Nevada. We drove down the ‘strip’ of Las Vegas once again but did not stop this time having visited on our way up and seen enough!!!! Even outside the main strip of Las Vegas, however there was no forgetting that we were still in the gambling epicentre of the USA. Slot machines lined the walls of the ‘gas’ stations, and glittering casinos appeared out of the desert frontier, offering gas rebates and ‘all you can eat’ meals to entice anyone in for one last ‘fix’ before they left Nevada. If you like to have a ‘flutter’, Nevada is the place to be and if you are here then you have to see it - some of ... read more
