We had a lovely breakfast brought to our room so that we could then be free to be up on deck for our sail out of London at 8:30. That didn’t happen - well, the breakfast did but the sailaway was postponed until 10:30 because it required two tugs due to the high winds, and our agent had only ordered one tug. We met a nice couple from Melbourne on deck - the only Aussies so far. So at 10:30am the Tower Bridge was raised and we backed down the Thames for quite a ways. We had been turned around by the time we reached Greenwich. We saw a number of things along the way - the millennium dome, the east India wharf, canary wharf and the Thames Barrier (to help prevent flooding). We had a ... read more

Wow! What a day! We are staying in the amazing 1-Star hotel at Euston - the Travelodge! Tom’s Scottishnish overcame him with this booking. He wouldn’t let me book any others because London accommodation is so dear, so here we are in a poky room that is either freezing or stuffy, and a shower whose curtain drapes OUTSIDE the base - refuses to drape inside for water to run off, so the minuscule bathroom floor is a swamp and terribly slippery! I was sure there were critters climbing over me during the night (lice? Just my imagination I’m sure). Anyway, my darling went out searching for brekky this morning. They tried to charge us for two nights instead of one last night (they have a Thomas Witt staying??), so Tom wasn’t going to support their brekky ... read more

This morning we were up early to have our leisurely brekky before catching the first our trains for today. We were on the 8am train from Inverness to Edinburgh. It was sad to be leaving when I’m just aching to explore more. Just a couple of months ago my DNA results changed my family’s story, giving me Scottish roots that I had been totally unaware of! My ancestors came from north of Inverness, but that will be an adventure for next year! I have always loved Scotland and was envious of Tom’s very Scottish roots. So we were on Scotrail down to Edinburgh, then a couple hours wait in the first class lounge before joining the Virgin train to Preston, and then from Preston to Euston, watching the Scottish and then English countryside sliding by. We ... read more

After yesterday’s lunch we were not about to chance breakfast with the hotel cooks, so Tom went out hunting and gathering. He did awesomely well because he brought back an orange juice, some berry flavoured porridge, a cheesy bacon flatbread and a latte! Thank you McDonalds! After brekky we went next door to board our train to the Kyle of Lochalsh. That’s where the train was going and where we had seats booked and selected for but we were getting off at Plockton. So after two and a half hours of travelling through little Scottish villages, request stations (where you have to ask the conductor to stop the train), heather covered hills, wide open moors and alongside lochs, we alighted at Plockton station and enjoyed a leisurely 1 km stroll into the village, giving us a ... read more

What a day of contrasts! Our hotel in Glasgow, right next to the railway station has such good wifi! We wandered downstairs and found that the brasserie for breakfast that I’d researched is part of our hotel! After a lovely hot buffet breakfast we packed up and headed to the station to catch our train for our 3 1/2 hour trip to Inverness. The train was just a local train with people alighting and joining all along the way. There were some men on their way to Inverness to watch a soccer game - they started on their ales and drank and chatted (getting louder and louder) all along the way. We were chatting to a man who works for Wendy Wu. Wendy Wu tours started in Sydney but HQ is now London. The scenery along ... read more

This morning was a little troublesome. We were packed and had brekky nicely timed, but then when we were leaving and went to pay our landlady, our cards were declined. ALL OF THEM! She only takes debit cards because of the charges with credit cards, but our debit cards wouldn’t be accepted. We gave her what cash we had and went up to wait for our bus. We were now 20 mins late after all the fluffing around with the cards. Luckily Natalie was also running late, but she was able to lend us £150 cash to give the landlady and we could be on the way. Apparently that had also just happened to the Canadians at their lodging. Natalie also then paid for us four to get in to Eilean Donan Castle, our first stop ... read more

This morning we were up and organised early. Brekkie at our B&B didn’t start until 8am and our bus was picking us up at 8.20, so we downstairs and ready when brekkie started. I had scrambled eggs with Skye smoked salmon - really thick and so rich in flavour! Fiona, our hostess, said that the salmon is smoked down near Armadale where our ferry came in last night. Natalie, our bus driver/guide, told us stories of fairies and giants as she drove us around Skye this morning, taking us to Fairy Pools and waterfalls and pointing out sleeping giants (The Old Man of Storr) in the geographical features around us. She also showed us heather and the beautiful scenery looking back to the mainland at the Quiraing. We saw the red Cuillin Mountains, and the black ... read more

Up early this morning to check out of our hotel, cross the road to the bus stations and find the Discover Scotland Tour to Skye and the Highlands. Our delightful tour guide/bus driver is 26 year old Natalie. This minibus has a group of 6 Thai, 1 Canadian Californian, 2 Canadians, 2 French, 3 unknown and Tom and I. We passed the kelpies, Stirling Castle, the Wallace Monument and Doune Castle again before stopping in Callander for a toilet/refreshment break. We then continued on our way, crossing Rannoch Moor, and Glencoe where the McDonalds were murdered all those years ago, and on to Fort William. Here we had time to withdraw some cash and have a spot of lunch before being put on the Jacobite Steam train to Mallaig. This was the train used for Harry ... read more

Tom went out and got our standard Scottish fare from around the corner (bacon & egg McMuffin and a latte) while I got myself organised then we crossed the road to the major bus stop across the road for our Rabbies Outlander Adventure (and our tour guide is wearing a kilt). Outlander is a TV series based on a series of books by Diana Gabaldon. I’ve owned the books (and obtained their author’s autograph) for years. Love them and love the Tv series. Tom watches it with me, for the action, adventure and Scottish history. I watch it for the love and romance between Jamie and Claire, and the touch of family history. Leaving Edinburgh we went across the new Queensferry Bridge, the third bridge across the firth of the Forth (across the mouth of the ... read more

Wow! Early brekky today, just to be sure everything goes smoothly. We motored up the Thames as we ate, and the watched the docking procedures from our balcony. Tilbury is very significant for me, for I know that my grandparents (who I grew up with but now know are not my biological grandparents), my biological grandparents, and my great grandparents all boarded ships here at Tilbury in the 1920s to migrate to Australia. What a huge step that was for them to take. As we dock I notice that the tide is out and the mudflats of the Thames are exposed (back in the old days scavengers had ”territories” in the mudflats, areas that were theirs to see what the tide had left behind to scavenge and raise money from). Other ports had hitech buffers attached ... read more
