A jungle rain is a hard rain, my friend. It makes a man lose his moral footing and slide down the slippery roots of temptation into the mud of turpitude, where the grasping leeches of vice wait. In the flash of a bolt of lightning they hitch a ride on your shoe unfelt; moments later they sink teeth into your leg or chest or groin and begin to gorge themselves into bloody obesity. A jungle rain is nothing to the smiling, aloof natives of Taman Negara. But it drives any stray cats or carolinians into their smelly, dingy "family chalets". Sanity? A temporary, undependable thing, like all other forms of health. --------------------- Taman Negara. It means "National Park" in Malay. All the restaurants here (about six) are built on barges in the river. At closing time ... read more

Like the Rough Guide says, Melaka grows on you. We've done a lot of walking around. The first night I left the family asleep and walked a few blocks in a light rain to a big outdoor food court, and had a great bowl of spicy seafood Laksa with a large Tiger beer. Yum. The next day we found an Indian restaurant that serves great roti (griddle flat bread) for breakfast, and fish head curry for dinner. We found lots of other fun/interesting stuff here. The "fish spa" where Melody paid 50 good ringgets to have little fish nibble the dead skin from her feet. The "Museum of Enduring Beauty" which documents self-mutilation in cultures worldwide ("enduring" as in "enduring pain"). Interesting shops in Chinatown (we even encountered some kind of film crew set up on ... read more

Melaka, 3:45 am Left home 3:30 pm Sat, Param drove us to RDU. Changed planes in Houston, changed planes in LAX, EVA Air 13+ hours to Taipei, hung around there for a few hours, then 4 1/2 more to KL. Once there we had to figure out how to buy a SIM card for the GSM phone Melody bought on EBay, get some cash from the ATM (ringgets, about 3 to a dollar), clear customs (long line). After that came the harder part: find a bus to Melaka. We still don't know whether there is one, a carefully guarded secret, or not. We ended up taking the scenic route: local bus to NiLai, local bus to Seremban, then the last express bus of the day to Melaka. Finally a taxi from the bus station to the ... read more

Asia » Malaysia October 5th 2009

Why Malaysia? Melody & I had fond memories from about a week there in 2006, most of it on Pangkor Island off of the west coast. We remembered it as a safe, uncrowded, inexpensive place, with a good bus system, enough tourist infrastructure without being touristy. Thanks to its history as an English colony, and its present popularity with Aussie and Kiwi tourists, English is widely spoken. The culture seemed family-friendly and conservative, without being reactionary. Also, we could fly from LAX for about $700 each round-trip on EVA Airlines, changing planes in Taipei, Taiwan. For awhile we seriously considered a few days in Taiwan, to return to Hualein and gorgeous Taroko Gorge. But we decided trying to front-load the trip with a Chinese country would cause overload. Getting from RDU to LAX would bring the ... read more

Bowdon Family in Yucatan October 2006 We hadn't taken an international family trip in over 5 years, since Turkey in April 2001, so it was past time. Andrea was about to turn 9 and Benjamin 6 1/2. We considered a lot of destinations and settled on Yucatan, for lots of reasons. * it has some tourist infrastructure without being "touristy" (that is, outside of Cancun and the Riviera Maya) * the many Mayan archeological sites are very dramatic and educational * we could fly free on our Delta miles (in and out of Cancun) * Dick had fond memories of two trips there as a teenager * and he remembered some high school Spanish As usual for us, we did a lot of reading in advance from all the guidebooks we could get our hands on ... read more

Just in case someone might read this who doesn't know us ... we're a family living in Cary, North Carolina. Our kids are Andrea and Benjamin (ages 12 and 9 as of fall 2009). By 1996 Melody & I had been to London and Australia mostly on business. That fall we took our first real international vacation, when we used frequent flier miles from our business trips to fly around the world for about six weeks. We ended up visiting Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, China, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Germany, and France. It was on that trip that we developed a style of travel that we’ve used since, with our children, on trips to: Turkey in 1999 and 2001, Hawaii in 2004, California in 2005, Yucatan, Mexico in 2006, and Malaysia in 2009. On these trips our ... read more
