A GAME WITH NO WINNERS Last entry I sent you some photographic proof of what a very nice squat toilet looks like, so this time around I thought I'd give you a little more insight into their use - at least from the male perspective. As you can probably imagine, most public restrooms aren't in exactly the most sanitary state (you can usually find them from about 50ft away by the fairly strong odor). And most stalls / pits (at least in the mens rooms) come with an amorphous ring of yellow fluid (we'll try to imagine it's not pee for now). Now, what you wouldn't know from just a glance is that these liquid rings are actually boundary lines for a game Chinese men like to play - "How Far Away Can I Stand and ... read more

For those who have never done the backpacker / travel-on-the-cheap thing, I have to tell you, it can be some seriously hard work at times. I mean, there really is an art to travelling as cheaply and close to the ground as possible. I was reminded of this recently when I caught an overnight train from Yichang (the end of the Yangtze River Cruise) to Zhiangjiajie. I caught the train at 1am and had to be up again at 4am to get off at my stop. When I walked out of the train station at 4:30am, absolutely everything was dead minus a few taxis and a local bus. I needed to catch a minibus from Zhiangjiajie City to Zhiangjiajie Village, and they didn't start running for another two and a half hours. Of course the first ... read more

Notice - This entry is more about the pics than the stories, so sorry in advance for the sub par writing. I'll work on getting myself into a few more awkward situations. Electric scooters / mopeds seem are a bit intense here (as I assume they are across most of Asia). There's just one problem with them - they seem to have the same privileges as both pedestrians and automobiles. When they are in the street, this isn't a problem for me, but when they are on the sidewalks it gets a bit crazy. And they are definitely "allowed" to use the sidewalks because I've seen traffic cops wave them out of the street onto the sidewalk - granted they were waved out of the street because they were going the wrong-way down a one way ... read more

Okay, so in a moment of sanity, I actually decided to take it a bit easy yesterday and not run around like a mad man - probably a result of having climbed a 7000ft mountain (Hua Shan) the day before. So I spent half of yesterday visiting the Army of Terracotta Warriors outside Xi'an and the other half of the day reading in the park. And, in typical Andy fashion, the memorable part of the day happened in the park. In the span of an hour while I was reading - 1) A 3-year-old gave me a surprise bear hug from my blind side. He literally ran up and almost tackled me while giggling manically, and he wouldn't let go until his dad had snapped a picture. And then the dad suggested that his twin take ... read more

This is a frightening thought, but I may be the most photographed person in all of China!!! In my first few days here, I kept catching people taking pictures of me on the sly, and when I looked at them I noticed them waving but thought they wanted me to get out of the way. That all changed today, though when I visited the Forbidden City with about 300,000 Chinese tourists. Being tourists themselves, they were not nearly as subtle, so some asked shyly/politely and other just grabbed my arm and pulled me into their photos. So, I'm guessing in a rough estimate that I was in 25 pictures with people today (and another couple hundred where I didn't know I was in the picture). Crazy! I'm just worried that my drab travel fashion sense is ... read more

Okay, here goes with my first blog post ever. I'm two and a half days into my adventure and I'm still alive, so that's a great start. The first thing that needs to be said, which I'm sure most everyone has heard before, is that the smog here is crazy! I feel like I'm walking around in a meat smoker - like I'm a walking piece of human beef jerky. For anyone who watched Seinfeld, it feels like that episode where Kramer locked himself in his apartment for a week smoking cigars and came out looking like he'd aged a decade. Now, as for the title of this post, I just need to say that the Chinese seem to be a very hopeful people, especially when they are driving. They are willing to give just about ... read more
