My name is Michael Odula, an Education Graduate, a Former High School Principal, United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP) Global 500 Laureate (1990) awarded for outstanding practical Environmental achievements and widely traveled. I was born in 1947.
My wife Jane Odula, a trained teacher and also graduated in Social Development Studies with Diploma at Coady International International Institute, St Xavier University in Canad. She did Social Development work in Kenya with several Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs), working with major local groups namely schools, youth and women groups and farmers promoting sustainable development initiatives. She was born in 1956 and also widely travelled.
Our family has old children, who aare now married but now we stay with our grandchildren Gloroia, Odula Junior, Tania and Albright, Michael Martin and Diana who are total orphans. Both of us are now retired but we are still active and indiqa faqiaqable in doing community projects.
PROGRAMS
Odula family undertakes the following community projects in Rusinga Island on Lake Victoria - in Homa bay county in KEnya.
Milimani, a pre school Nursery school and also lower classed. Most ofd the children here are orphans and vulnerable children whose ages range from three years (baby class) to 7 or 8 in Lower Primary school classes.
The school provides education, school supplies and feeding program for these needy and disadvantaged children.
Other programs undertaken by the school include
1. Psychological support, guidance and counselling and spiritual nourishment.
2. Lobby and advocay for the orphans and vulnerable children in the communitty.
3. Education sponsorship scheme for orphanned Girls and other girls from poverty stricken families who cannot afford High School fees payments and consequently drop out of school.
The school sponsorship scheme place empasisis on Girl Child Education because in most African societies Girls/Women Education and welfare have been compromised by stereotypes, prejudices, discriminatoiry attitudes and customs in favour of boys and men. .
The scheme lobies for school fees support to Girls cto continue with their High School Education. and Tertiary studies at various institutions.
4. An organicx farming for horticultura; production including vegertables, fruits, kales and many others. Those interested can teach at Milimani Academy in the morning hours and work in the organic farm in the evening to avert working during the hot sun shines.
5. In situ Forest conservation measurers involving farmer managed Natural Natural Regeneration (FMNR) activities at the foot of Ligongo Hills. Milimani Academy is situated at the idylic site at the hillside.
Odula family has formed intersectoral collaboration with village/herbalist managing an Herbal Clinic for treatement applying herbal medicine.
The CPR measurers also include building stone walls, gabbions, swales to stop massive soil erosion from Ligongo Hills within the neighbourthoods of Milimani Academy.
The Odula family also manages a voluntourism / voluntourists work on the projects and also afford time on weekends to visit places of historical and geographical interests in Lake Victoria, namely Tom Mboya Muselium and Museum, Ruma NAtional Park, Hot springs near homa bay town, Bird islands in Lake Victoria.
Those interested and go fishing, boating, hiking, canoeing, mountaineering, sporting and other various out door games.
ACCOMMODATION
Our family provides accommodation with beds, bedding, mosquito nets, plus food. The visitors are encouraged to eat local dishes which most of them have been found appetizing.
NO CHARGES
The are no charges for stay but the visitors are encouraged to donate/contribute towardds food due to hard economic conditions generated by the catastrophic climate impacts namely prolonged drought which have caused poverty and starvation in Lake Victoria region where prices of essential commodities have hiked.
