Continued travelling South through Wyoming, passing more cowboy towns. The last week has been a bit like a spaghetti western with all the cowboy and indian towns. Not to much to report today though, travelled another 300 odd miles and reached Denver late in the arvo. On the recommendations of few people we went to Casa Bonita , a mexican restaraunt, for tea. I had heard about it from watching South Park, it was Cartmans fave place. Googled it before we left and everyone said it was a great fun place ,food not so good though. Well they were wrong, the [View Full Entry]

Aday of looking at stuff carved into the side of mountains. First up we went to Mt Rushmore. The place is huge and an amazing example of what you can do with a hell of a lot of dynamite. The detail on the faces is unbelievable and they do look as though the eyes follow you. A job well done. In contrast the crazy horse monument down the road is a bit of a shambles. It has been going for about 40 years and only the head is done. It is massive though, the whole sculpture will be about 2 to [View Full Entry]

We spent most of the day again driving down the interstate. Quick and efficient but not real scenic. So only a quick spiel and a few photos. Called in at the Devils Monument, a huge hunk of rock rising about 600 feet above the ground, the Indians reckons that the marks were put it the side of it by a big bear. I’m a bit sceptical about theat. Saw a bucket load of Prairie Dogs again. They almost look like a ferret, I don’t where the dog name comes from. There were hundreds of them digging holes everywhere. Crossed the border [View Full Entry]

Not much to say today. Spent most of it driving across Montana back towards Wyoming. Went via cowboy town of Billings and ended up at Little Big Horn. Saw where those nasty redskins massacred those poor cavalry boys and General Custer. Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse and the gang picked them off over two days, until they got Custer at his last stand on top of the hill where the monument is. Still chilly and snow about the place. It is a pain really, all nuisance value as there isn’t enough to ski in or hire a snowmobile, which are for [View Full Entry]

Just when we thought the weather couldn’t get more extreme, it did. Left Jackson in the morning and the road was covered in ice. The further we got down the road towards Yellowstone it got worse. Then it started snowing again, further covering the bitumen highway, although in the photos it just looks like a white road. The morning temp started at 11 deg F (-11 deg C) but warmed up for a sweltering max of 31 deg F (-0.5 deg C). We drove for about 100 miles on ice, in the little Mazda rental, before arriving at Old Faithful. Parked [View Full Entry]

Stayed the night in Salt Lake City. Woke this morning to find about 6 inches of snow everywhere. It was the driest, fluffiest powder snow i have ever seen. A freak cold front has hit the Nth West USA causing temps to plummet. The temp today didnt get over about 2 degrees. It didnt feel cold, although i think that was because it was so cold it numbed you. Looked around the city at the Mormon buildings etc before heading north into Idaho and then Wyoming. The weather kept getting worse until it was almost blizzard like conditions driving down the [View Full Entry]

Left Las Vegas and headed through Arizona and then into Utah, home of the mormon. Still in dry desert and canyon land, but the futher north we go it is greening a bit and more trees' growing. Stayed the night at Bryce Canyon, and we woke up to it snowing outside. From the mid to high 30s for the last week, it was a shock to have a day where the tempreture didnt get over 5 deg. Although it was sunny, the wind was howling and it was absolutely freezing and bitter. The landscape looks like something out of a cartoon [View Full Entry]

Flew from Las Vegas to the west rim of the Grand Canyon. Went over Hoover dam and Lake Mead, lots of desert surrounding the whole place, its hard to imagine all the water from the Colorado River even makes it this far. Once we arrived at the Indian reservation, they control pretty much all of it, we then took a helicopter ride down to the river, which saved a 12 hour walk down the side of the canyon. Had a quick trip down the Colorado before flying back to the top for a traditional lunch of chicken and corn?!?. But it [View Full Entry]

Arrived in Las Vegas, this place is huge. The casinos and hotels just go on and on and on. Just to walk past some of them, like Ceasers Palace takes 10 minutes just to walk past, they are absolutely massive. During the day the place looks a bit blandish, but a night it is just a mass of lights. There are people everywhere, still lots of Australians about. The weather is hot, about 35 degrees, so thank god for air conditioning. Have only spent about 10 dollars on the pokies, and that was only to get the free drinks they give [View Full Entry]
