I saw blue sky, the sun, and fluffy white clouds today for the first time in China. We took a 4 hour and 30 minute cruise that felt like forever. It was extremely hot, and a few got sunburns. By the time we got to Yangshuo? we were practically dead and found out that we had 3 hours of free time to explore the streets. We ended up going to the main area of shopping/ bargaining called West Street where is a huge tourist shopping area. While most of the shop/stand keepers understood and spoke English it was sometimes hard to do a lot of bargaining with Maia/Emily/Antoine/Mike/John because they couldn't even pretend to fit in. I finally started to use my Mandarin as I had to pay attention to what they were saying, and had ... read more

So today we went to Jin Li, an old town, which seemed more like a tourist attraction. There were tons of bargaining in little side shops and old women selling flowers and sweets on the street. Many little children were running around, as there were gigantic fixtures where they could climb and play on. They had a little outdoor tea house where regulars played games of mahjong as they drank jasmine tea. It was easy to get lost in Jin Li because the streets turned randomly, making it seem like a corn field maze at farms. I tried hami-melon ice cream which was actually really good, and just ended up walking around taking pictures of really cute babies... you can go right ahead and call me weird, but it was very entertaining and somewhat fun. So maybe "yesterday" wasn't the highlight of the trip if you think that getting mobbed by wild monkeys is ten times better. Especially if you're Celina or Tony, who probably has rabies by now. When we were on Mount Emei, we decided to see the monkeys- where of course you could feed them and play with them. In my mind, I thought, "Awwww cuteee monkeys like curious george!!" which ended up being, of course, false. When we finally made it to the monkey site (after at least an hour of walking up and down stairs) I was scared. Apparently the monkeys were more wild than normally, and a few people already got injured by the time we got there. And I thought I had it bad when the monkey started to climb on me- reaching for ... read more

So today- was pretty much the highlight of chengdu for me. On our way to Le-shan Mt (Giant Buddha) we made a pit stop at a tea harvesting farm, which was really pretty, although that was where I realized that I can barely walk anymore without having everything ache afterwards. At Le-shan Mt, where we viewed from a speed-boat for probably just 10minutes we got to wave at random people who were actually at the foot of the Buddha, and everyone started taking pictures of us- mostly because there were Caucasians on board. We went to Ermei Mt hotel, after- and had 2 hours of free time - so the majority of the group decided to get a 2hour body massages for 120 yuan which if you think about it is a really good deal considering ... read more

So we went to the Panda Research Base- where I thought I was going to hold a panda for 100 yuan, it ended up being 1000 yuan, soooo instead I "held and kissed" a panda.- which was really fun We went to the Wen Shu (Buddhist) Temple afterwards, which was absolutely gorgeous. After leaving the Temple, we started to learn how to bargain for real. We learned from Cindy, our tour guide, that instead of saying "Zhe shi duo shao qian" (meaning how much is this) all we had to do was hold something up- and say "How duo qia" also instead of saying, "Pian yi dian er" (cheaper) we should say "Shou dar" We then went to the Green Ram (Taoist) Temple which was also very pretty. Then at night we went to see Sichuan ... read more

WE MADE IT!! Arriving at 7:20pm at the train station in Chengdu, we had trouble finding our tour guide. While we thought that we were suppose to find a sign with our two teachers' names, our tour guide ended up having a sign with Celina's and my name. We decided that we were lost in the middle of Chengdu after 5 minutes without seeing anyone, until someone ran over to us. I mean- who could ever mistake a group of 10 with 7 people who are far from looking any bit Asian? Anyhow, we got to the Shu Feng Garden Hotel - which was absolutely gorgeous We got to eat at the restaurant in the hotel- which was the best thing in the world since we were all starving. So we all ended up shoveling every ... read more

You may ask yourself, what can a group of 8 students from Newton do on a 27hour train ride? the answer is simple- eat, eat, and eat. if only you were there, you would've known how painful it was. the four girls, including myself got soft sleepers while the boys had hard sleepers, we were in an enclosed room, while they were out in the public. We came up with a list of rules, that one should follow if planning on taking the train. (oh and before i forget- I just happened to be the one who forgot her passport at my host family's house... go figure) 1. refrain from putting any parts of body into random nooks. 2. when going on a trip - remember your passport 3. hold in your desire to pee if ... read more

Today, before I go to the train station I just wanted to share my first half of the day. For breakfast I ate dumplings and an apple. For Lunch I ate noodles with egg, tomato, and an assortment of greens. During lunch (because my host sister was back home) I was told that the dumplings mean protection and safety while the noodles symbolizes good luck. So because I was going on a trip, my host mom wanted to share this tradition with me before I left so that I would come back safetly and have a good time. I thought that it was a very sweet gesture, and the food was really good. So hopefully everything goes well. Love you all- Michelle... read more

Thank goodness jet lag did not affect me at all, because I got to go out and about with my host sister, host mom, and my host sister's aunt. We went to Qianmen steet, where there were tons of shops and apparently the number one restaurant for peking duck. (Cora- it's not the restaurant with the duck statue in front.. but hopefully I'll get Ms. Ding to bring me ther sometime, so I can take a picture with it.) We started to walk around and I was pushed into store after store, to look around. While I did not have my wallet on me because I wasn't planning on buying anything, my host mom with her sister decided to pick random things and buy them for me, even though I insisted that they not. My host ... read more
