Another week has gone by! Time seems to be going by very quickly. Both of us are starting to feel tired - even though we aren't working particularly hard I guess just living here is starting to catch up with us. Day to day living is certainly much harder than in Australia. This week has bought the usual weekly dramas - clogged toilet, computer problems and no water for hours a day! This weeks lesson was totally on the computer and despite trying to take my computer into the classroom prior to classes to check all was ok the teachers told me that 'you just take your computer to the classroom, plug it in and it will work - don't worry!' - mine of course didn't! We have a different brand of computer to the other ... read more

We had a great weekend! With Mel and Renee we walked to one of the smaller villages nearby before catching the bus to Guangshui Town where we spent a few very enjoyable hours. The little village was so interesting. It had small family sawmills and many little one room noodle making 'factories'. The rooms all had narrow rollers through which the noodle dough was flattened and then it was cut and hung out to dry on wooden racks. The local blacksmith had the most marvellous face - I would love to take some close up photos of some of the older people! Hopefully I will get some eventually. We always ask permission to take photos with people in them and quite often they don't allow it. The village was very poor and we spent some time ... read more

It's starting to feel like home here!

We spent last weekend in Wuhan which is two hours by train south of Guangshui. We had been planning a weekend away after we got paid. Last week was our first payday and the school paid us without any problem with a large wad of 100 yuan notes. We shall have to open a bank account eventually! I have been very stressed as the school took our passports nearly a month ago to get our Foreign Experts Certificate (which allows us to convert up to 70% of our wage into foreign currency when we leave China) and our Residency Permits which allow us to live legally in China. Anybody who was in Toowoomba before we left will know what a process it was for us to get our visas to allow us to come to China ... read more

Our day starts with us waking up around 6am with the sound of the students 'wake up music' in the background. This week they have started a summer programme which means that they all get up earlier and are now outside doing exercises at 6.15 instead of 6.40! We turn on the laptop and catch up with the morning headlines and have even started watching video excerpts of the local TV news. It's amazing what you can find to watch when you're desperate. We have no access to television news as the only English station on our TV is a 24 hours cable movie channel. There are also no English newspapers available at all in this part of China. We also download the headlines of Aussie newspapers every day. Breakfast consists of stewed apples and muesli. ... read more

The school had allocated a teacher to act as our support teacher and translator. His Chinese name translates to Champion and I had already spoken to him via phone from Australia. He is a Grade 3 English teacher, 33 years old, married with a young daughter. Champion collected us in Wuhan and after packing all all suitcases into the minibus we left the city late in the afternoon and began the two hour drive to Guangshui, north of Wuhan and close to the border of the neighbouring province of Henan. We were very surprised at the high standard of the highway but were told that it was the main highway to Beijing. The four lanes did not however have a lot of traffic on them. Champion said that there were still not a lot of privately ... read more

Jerry and I left Australia at midnight with heavy suitcases and a feeling of "have we done the right thing?" Arriving in Shanghai we were met at the airport by a an English speaking guide who drove us an hour to our hotel - the 'Yangtze' (can highly reccommend it). It was freezing cold and raining. The hotel was an original art deco hotel and was situated very close to the Shanghai museum and Nanjing Lu (St), which is a pedestrian shopping mall which stretches to The Bund, the famous waterfront concessional area which was Shanghai's Wall Street in the 1930's. We spent three nights wandering the streets around our hotel and dodging rain showers. On the eve of Chinese New Year all night you could hear fire crackers go off - it was totally crazy ... read more

2012 - These entries have been copied from emails I sent home in 2001. I can't help but laugh at them now - many years of travelling since have changed our values etc so much. I guess our experiences and expectations now have been shaped by these earlier travels. I'm also pleased to note that my photography skills have improved - very few photos were taken on this trip - maybe too many are taken today with digital cameras..... Jerry and I have been in Thailand now for four days and are enjoying it a lot but we are finding it much harder than Malaysia to find our way around. The main problem is language - nobody speaks any English and to make it harder all the signs are written in squiggly Thai symbols… All part ... read more

At the moment we are in Kota Bahru at the top of the eastern side of Malaysia. Tomorrow we cross the border into Thailand but at this stage am unsure as to whether we stay in the region for a few days or just keep heading north to Bangkok. We can’t get any information on the train timetables until we actually arrive in Thailand. We’ve booked a taxi to drive us the one hour north and drop us off at the border immigration office, where we then have to walk the kilometre between the two border posts and onward to the train station. We loved our time in Kuala Terengganu - the city had a strong Islamic influence and we seemed to be the only tourists there. We spent 2 days and nights there - we ... read more

Holiday weekend in Kuantan

June 2nd 2001

We’ve just enjoyed three days in Kuantan on the east coast and facing the South China Sea. The bus drive from Jerentut was pretty boring and the drivers had their 30 minute meal break after 2 hours of travel which always make the bus arrive half an hour later than scheduled. The buses are scary to travel in as the drivers do - at least to how way of thinking - the most dangerous things. That day they sat on the tail of trucks piled high with logs - the windscreen was nearly touching them and the driver kept trying to pass the trucks but the road was often too narrow or there was traffic coming towards them. Quite a few times they passed as we were approaching blind corners. It was made worse by the ... read more

I’m writing this in a little café in Jerentut in Central Malaysia, whilst waiting for a bus to take us to Kuantan on the east coast of the country. We arrived in Jerentut after five hours on the Jungle Railway from KL. We travelled 2nd class - it was clean, comfortable and a/c. The train was very busy as it is now school holidays here. Jerentut is a quiet little village, though we discovered the main part of the town (much bigger) when we climbed up the hill behind us. We are actually in the old part - the newer part is higher and set amongst trees so hard to see from here. We spent the night in a small hotel, paying only $16 for the room. After wandering around the village we located a laundry ... read more
