Asia » Taiwan » Taipei February 1st 2010

We arrived in Taipei after our short flight from Hong Kong to dull skies and cool weather. A bus from the airport took us to the railway station in central Taipei from where we caught a taxi to our hotel - The See You Hotel. It was actually only ten minutes on foot from the train station though we were thankful we didn't walk as it was hard to find amidst the traffic and highrises. The hotel was great - a small room but it had everything we needed, and was spotlessly clean and modern. Breakfast was included in the rate though we did get a surprise next morning when we asked where the restaurant was - and was given two breakfast vouchers to used at Kentucky Fried on the opposite street corner! We left to ... read more

We arrived in Hong Kong late in the afternoon and caught an airport bus to our hotel - the YWCA - which proved to be a comfortable and reasonably priced place to stay. It was also on the main bus route to the harbour and the Star Ferry Terminal. It took an hour to reach our hotel from the airport - it was endless views of skyscrapers all the way! After settling in we braved the streets, trying to orientate ourselves but got hopelessly lost. Thankfully there was a odd shaped building near the hotel so we were able to find our way back eventually. We had trouble finding somewhere relatively inexpensive to eat - but I guess we had to expect that everything would be so much more expensive here. Next morning we found the ... read more

Asia » Thailand » North-West Thailand » Mae Salong January 25th 2010

A bus dropped us on the highway at the turnoff to the tea growing area of Mae Salong - from there we caught a ride in a truck taxi for the winding two hour trip into the mountains. It was very pretty - lots of terraced fields, wide views and as we got closer to Mae Salong we passed many tea plantations. Once in town we found a small cabin (Shin Sane Guesthouse) in which to spend the next couple of nights - the owner was a very cheery man and the guest house was next to the local covered market - convienient for early morning market visits! We set off for a long walk along some of the dirt paths leading out of the town. Mae Salong was settled by the the 93rd Regiment of ... read more

Asia » Thailand » North-West Thailand » Chiang Rai January 22nd 2010

It was a long trip from Laos into Thailand! We were now on the homeward trip, albeit our arrival in Australia was still a fortnight away. As air fares from Laos were very expensive and entailed a long drive back to Luang Prabang to catch any flights we decided to overland it to Thailand instead and fly to Bangkok from Chiang Rai. We were up early to catch the bus - we had been dropped off by the bus company outside the hotel on our arrival to Luang Nam Tha but our departure started with a half hour tuk tuk ride to the highway 10 klms out of the town where we were left to await the arrival of our bus. We only hoped that the bus driver knew we were to be collected! Three quarters ... read more

Asia » Laos » North » Muang Sing January 18th 2010

It was a long eight hour day in a bus before we arrived in Muang Sing, but quite an interesting trip as we passed dozens of tiny poor roadside villages as the bus wound it's way around the hilly roads. Along the roadside, for literally the entire trip, we passed grass fronds drying - all carefully laid out in rows of bundles. It was the bushy heads of a natural grass which dotted the hillsides - we found out later that it is harvested and sold to the Chinese who use them to make into brooms Those horrible short brooms which you have to crouch down to use! After arriving in Luang Nam Tha we easily found a guest house and then set off to explore the city in the twilight - we certainly needed to ... read more

Asia » Laos » West » Luang Prabang January 13th 2010

We both loved our few days in the gorgeous city of Luang Prabang! After leaving Vang Vieng by bus, a 5 hour winding trip through beautiful mountain scenery took us to the UNESCO listed city. This city was placed on the World Heriatge list in 1995 (only 6 years after Laos opened to tourism) and this has played a large part in preserving the traditional architecture. Enroute we passed dozens of tiny roadside villages, each one full of bare bottomed kids, hairy black pigs and palm leaf houses. We were dropped at the usual edge of town bus station where we caught a tuktuk to the tourist area of the city. Leaving Jerry in a cafe I started wandering the narrow cobbled side streets (once all dirt paths), which led down to the Mekong River, in ... read more

Asia » Laos » West » Vang Vieng January 11th 2010

A four hour bus trip along winding mountain roads took us to the tourist town of Vang Vieng, an area renowned for its' limestone karsts and the beautiful scenery surounding the River Namsong. It was a very pretty place! The town itself has a bad reputation and we were constantly warned by locals from other areas of Laos not to visit it. Tourism has bought a thriving drug scene to the region and one of the main attractions of the town is to tube (in tyre inner tubes) down the river, stopping to drink and party at the many bars which line the river bank. We did see quite a few drunken tourists but as we stayed away from the main bar area it didn't particularly affect us. Most of the activities in the town are ... read more

Asia » Laos » West » Vientiane January 7th 2010

We arrived in Vientiane at 5.30am feeling very tired from a sleepless overnight bus trip. A tuktuk from the bus station left us standing (coincidentally) next to a fountain in the town centre. It was here in 2001 that we asked a tuk tuk driver to take us after pointing at the diagram of a fountain on the map of the city in our guide book. Today the fountain isn't even marked in the guide book - in 2001 it was the main feature of the town centre. The city has changed so much it's almost unbelievable. In 2001 there were barely any hotels and most of the roads were still unsurfaced. Today it looks like any city in the world, though there's not a lot of really tall buildings. Brand name shops everywhere though! ... read more

Asia » Laos » South » Savannakhet January 3rd 2010

Leaving Pakse (another five hour bus trip) - we seemed to be spending a lot of time of buses - took us further north to Savannakhet. I liked the town immediately though it was very quiet. It had great vibes! It is not on the tourist trail though as a new bridge has just been completed across the Mekong River (the third bridge across the river connecting Thailand to Laos) this may change. A big tourist attraction here is a Dinosaur museum (there have been many dinosaur bones found in the region) but we weren't planning on visiting it. We had chosen a hotel from the guide book to be dropped at - it stops the tuk tuk drivers pestering you upon arrival at the bus station - but it wasn't the best choice as ... read more

Originally on crossing the border into Laos we had planned on catching a bus to Champasak (or at least the edge of the river so we could cross over by ferry to the village which until 30 years ago had been the seat of Lao Royalty) but after a language communication problem with the bus driver we decided to head for Pakse, further north and also on the Mekong River. It proved to be a wise decision as what we though was going to be a short day turned into a rather long one. With bus changes at the border - and then a Lao bus that then only took us half an hour up the road where we were left in a dusty little riverside cafe for a couple of hours to await yet ... read more
