Middle East » United Arab Emirates » Dubai July 13th 2018

I left Dubai, or the Middle East, almost three years after having done a three year plus stint for work. I spent a year traveling or spending time with family and friends. Then I got a new job in upstate New York, but I think that most of you know that, for a multitude of reasons, I was very unhappy there. I was contacted by my former company (having kept in touch with various colleagues over the years), and now I am back. This time based totally in Dubai. I took about six weeks off between jobs to prepare, but it flew by and there actually is still quite a bit left to do, but I got all the major stuff done. I hope. It was hectic yet so fun to spend time with everyone and ... read more

Growing up in Geneva and the Finger Lakes, I did not truly appreciate the beauty and culture of the area until after I had moved away. I lived in Southern California for 10 years, and tasted throughout that area in various types of wineries. I've also tasted in Italy, Germany, Spain, and other areas in the U.S. I was convinced that I liked California Reds and Finger Lakes Whites and that was that. For the last ten years or so, the red wines in the Finger Lakes have improved dramatically, as well as the options for dry wines. I have worked at a local winery for more than two years and this has opened my eyes to the region as a whole. It helps that I get free tastings at any area winery as well as ... read more

Our last couple of days would be spent in jolly ole London. Dana and the kids would leave Sunday, while we would leave on Monday. We got up early and set off to return the van at Gatwick. Then I was able to book return tickets for all of us to the city and back while Dana stored her big back at the airport. I had booked the Hilton London Paddington due to its proximity to some of the major attractions and its accessibility to the underground. We should have been able to get off the Gatwick Express in Victoria Station and taken the tube to Paddington station directly. But, again in keeping with the theme of our trip, apparently some geniuses decided to do rail line work on our line during the busy bank holiday ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Dorset » Lyme Regis May 4th 2018

For our last sidetrip, we met our cousin, who lives in Dartmouth, at a halfway point. We originally planned to meet in Lyme Regis, but as Friday was a day off from school and the weekend was a bank holiday weekend, we thought it would be too busy. So we decided on Charmouth, just a little northeast of Lyme Regis, but still a fossil hunting spot along the Jurassic Coast. We figured it would be a peaceful place to hangout and catch up, and that the boys and her two kids would like it. As a geologist, I was super excited myself and my dad was too (he majored in geology himself). I don't know a geology student who has not heard of the Jurassic Coast, an area that exposes rock formations from the Triassic, Jurassic ... read more

Today was the only time during our trip that we had a scheduled tourist visit. That was Stonehenge, planned for the first group time of 9:30 am. It was less than a half hour from The Barn to site, so we stopped at the cafe in Semley village and met with the lovely couple that run it for coffee and pastries. On our way, we were so happy that it was yet another beautiful day and it was only getting warmer. Still needed a light jacket but the wind was minimal and the skies were blue. We had to wait in line to confirm our reservations and English Heritage tickets before we were on a bus heading to the site. Stonehenge Stonehenge is thousands of years old and no one really seems to know its use; ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Dorset » Shaftesbury May 2nd 2018

We woke up early in preparation for our loooong drive from Whitby south down towards Salisbury. It was anticipated to take 6 hours and we dreaded any repeat of our drive from London the first day. However, it was a bright sunny day and we made it in time and as planned. We had filled up the car the night before (about £75!) so we only made one stop for lunch and bathroom breaks. It was also a gorgeous drive down. We went along the west side of the country, through Birmingham and down through Bristol. We drove right through Bath, which while very congested, was also quite lovely. Next time.... We found our next cottage, The Barn, easily enough. The first place still was unbeatable but this was a close second. Lots of room, fresh ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » North Yorkshire » Whitby May 2nd 2018

After York we continued onto our destination: Whitby. Actually, we were staying in the tiny town of Sleights. Cousin Mary had mentioned to us that she was pretty sure that this was the town at the bottom of a steep grade and she was very correct. Gorgeous scenery along the drive through the Yorkshire Moors with views out to the coast and Whitby itself as we approached. With a minor bit of trouble getting access to our cottage, we were happy with our new accommodations, though nothing could compare with the first (we were spoiled for the rest of the trip). Dad and I headed to the store again for a minor restock of our food and drinks. We cooked with our existing food supply that night and generally fell asleep early. The next day we ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » North Yorkshire » York May 1st 2018

We left beautiful Newstead Abbey Monday morning and headed north to Whitby, with a planned stop in York. I had visited both of these areas when I was younger visiting our family one summer. My sister wanted to see both places and my dad loves beach towns. So we were looking forward to our first tourist activity. It was a cold and windy day, but at least the sun was out! The weather was slowly improving. We drove through some nice little villages until we wound up in a city parking lot on the south side of the city. Our first stop was Clifford's Tower, where we picked up our English Heritage passes. These were worth it, especially for me and my sister (my parents were not overly tourist site ambitious). It is a 9-day oversea ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Nottinghamshire April 30th 2018

We'd been planning this trip for months and I was so looking forward to it. My first out of country adventure in two years! Time to visit the Grandmotherland and see family! I had done most of the planning myself, incorporating the requests of my traveling companions to put together a rough itinerary. If it is just me and things go wrong, it is easy to go with the flow and find a way out. When you have a sister with two small kids and your older parents coming too, the pressure was on for things to go smoothly. Or at least not to go wrong. It started out fine. We (my parents and I) arrived at the airport in Baltimore fine, but five hours early meaning we could not check in. We went in search ... read more

North America » United States » Texas » Austin March 27th 2017

Each year, a couple of my college girl friends and I plan a trip to a new city we haven't been to before. This year, it is Austin. Lizzie and I had heard so many good things about this place, and I had never really hung out in Texas, but Candice was skeptical. Until she started looking further into what to do. Then, Candice basically planned our entire trip. I arrived on Thursday night, the night before our little group was to meet up. I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express near the airport and just got caught up on some sleep and enjoyed my nice hotel room. The next day, I was allowed a late checkout, then took the free shuttle to the airport to meet up with my friends. The airport is very nice ... read more
