Part 1 - I am writing this portion on the train from Milan to Bern. We are in the foothills of the Alps, passing unbelievabally beautiful snow-covered mountain peaks, towns, streams and lakes. Lago Mageiore is a stunning lake surrounded by mountains that stretches from Italy to Switzerland. There is no way to describe the beauty of the water and the villas on the coast. Have to mention a wonderful Swiss couple and their 7 month old daughter who rode with us most of the way to Bern. Dad used to work in neuroscience, and we had a great discussion on state of the art in modeling brain functions. Another serendipitous moment. Wanted to update on Milan. It was hot, hot, hot! Had another minor moment of nervousness when we found no one at the hostel ... read more

Andrew and I started the day bright and early. Breakfast at the B&B was light but delicious -- Italian meats, croissants, jam, butter, Italian bread, and cappuccino. After that we walked to Piazza Navona to find our tour of a few old town sights followed by ancient Rome. It was at that point that it really struck me: wow, we are really in Rome!! Andrew has been saying that the city is magic, and that magic captured me this morning. The tour was better than I had hoped. Our guide is an archeologist, and she was smart, interesting, and really friendly. She explained that so much of Renaissance Rome, which makes up much of the modern city, had multiple foundations in imperial Rome. Much is St. Peter's church was built from stone from the Coliseum, the ... read more

The flight from home to Rome was smooth but long. Wished I could have gotten a bit more sleep, but the person behind me must have been assembling a bike or something. Noise and feeling was ongoing for 9 hours. Never figured out what was going on... After a 30 minute train ride (and chatting with the nicest Dutch couple about everything from the weather to ringtones), I arrived at Termini Station, Rimes central depot. Andrew warned me about swarms of crafty pickpockets, but none were to be found. After walking some time in what is more accurately described as going the much longer way rather than getting lost, I found the bed and breakfast. Unfortunately, no one was here, so I wandered some more in the getting hotter by the minute day. After an hour, ... read more

Well, tomorrow is the big day! Leaving Wednesday 06/03. First, fly to Chicago at 1235, then depart for Rome at 1645. The plane is scheduled to arrive at 0920 (Rome Time) Thursday 06/04. As excited as I am to see Rome, I'm most excited to see Andrew. He's been gone for almost a month, and Whitney and I sure miss him. You should be able to see a map of our itinerary as part of this post. Blogging is new, and I hope it works...rather, that I can work it/ If I can, then my next post should be from Rome!... read more
