It’s spring time again in Denmark so the country looks absolutely beautiful and we’ve been lucky enough to start getting some nice weather. Today (Sunday) has been around 20 degrees with sun shining, a slight breeze and a perfect day for us to finally take a long bike ride. We decided to ride out to Dreslette which is just near Haarby, about 12 kms from Assens, where our friends Niels and Irena live. Unfortunately, when we got there, they weren’t home, so we jumped back on the bikes and decided to ride back to Assens via the coastal road. Wow! It was absolutely beautiful! We took a wrong turn on the way home and ended up on the beach where we had to push our bicycles until we made it all the way along the separated ... read more

I thought it was finally time to sit down and write an update of what has been happening with us as the blog page has been gathering dust since November last year. I’ll try to keep it to the point, but it does require that I go all the way back to the beginning of December, so you may want to grab a cuppa before diving into this. At the beginning of December, I packed my “ABAYA” (cultural dress) and headscarf and flew off to Saudi Arabia. I had to get special permission to get a visa as normally married women are not allowed to visit the country without their husbands. The purpose of the visit was to attend the 1st Annual Saudi Arabian Audiology Congress which was held in Riyadh. For a first time conference ... read more

Our visit to "The City of Dreams"

It's Dan writing this blog :) During November, we took a short trip to Vienna, Austria. I think this has been our shortest trip so far, as we left Denmark on Friday night and came back on Sunday evening. Obviously, we did not have a lot of time to see all the things that Vienna has to offer, but it was nice to walk around and see a bit of such an old and historic city. We arrived in Vienna late on Friday night. We checked in at the Best Western Das Tigra and found out that Mozart had stayed in the same building during the summer of 1773. We thought that was interesting. It was really too late to do anything, so we called it the night and got some rest for the next day. ... read more

October 25th 2011

Hi all. It's Dan writing this blog about our latest weekend trip in the Mediterranean. We were looking forward to our trip to Malta as the cold weather here in Denmark is making its presence felt. Sure enough, we landed in Malta on a Friday with a pleasant 25C and lots of sunshine. Apart from New Zealand last year, we have not hired a car on any of our trips – we don't really see the need. This allows us to experience a bit more about what life is like in the places we travel. We stuck to this pattern and took the bus from the airport to our hotel in Sliema. This was a bit tricky, because the information we found on the Internet turned out to be wrong, but we managed to get to ... read more

OK, so we’re a bit behind on our blogging as we went to Zagreb three weeks ago, but finally I have found a moment to write about what a wonderful time we had in Croatia. When we booked the trip to Zagreb we really had no idea what was there, but the tickets were cheap and we figured, why not! We also didn’t realise that it coincided with our 1st wedding anniversary, so it was nice to figure out a few weeks before that we didn’t need to organise anything as we already had organised something. We took the long journey to Copenhagen Kastrup airport (about 3 hours) and then flew only 1½ hours before we landed in the capital of Croatia. It was an easy task to get from the airport to the main bus ... read more

I realised the last few blogs have all been about trips we’ve been taking in Europe and I figured it was about time we wrote an update about our lives in Denmark. It’s now October and coming up on a year since we arrived in Denmark. I can’t believe how times flies. The summer is now definitely over and we’re left wondering if this year’s winter will be like the last (lots of snow). The apartment we live now has pretty much everything we need, except an outdoor setting for our balcony, which we now don’t need because it’s going to be too cold to use it anyway. Our cats arrived back in mid-June and they have settled in nicely. We’re lucky to have a wonderful neighbour upstairs who babysits them when we go on our ... read more

Hi All, It's Dan writing this update. Well, a couple of weeks after our trip to London we had our work summer party, also known as Høstfest (harvest party). We had a nice evening with all our colleagues from work and we were amazed at how much Danish we could speak... after a few drinks. There were lots of food, music and dancing until 2.30am when we went home to wake up the next day with a very bad headache. But, it was a lot of fun. Good news, we both passed our Danish level 2 exam and we are continuing to understand more of this language every day. We are both very excited about learning Danish and look forward to our next exam early next year. How time flies! On to our trip story. We ... read more

Last weekend, Dan and I flew to London to join the fighting and get a free pair of sneakers…..just kidding! We had planned the trip to London some time ago and it just happened to coincide with the London Riots of 2011. Luckily, I think most of it had stopped by the time we arrived and apart from seeing a few dodgy people walking around in new trainers :), you wouldn’t have known that anything had being going on. We arrived into Stansted airport via our Ryanair flight at about 10:30pm and proceeded to wait in the long queues to get through immigration. It seemed like every tourist in the world had just arrived in London and this was soon confirmed the following day by the number of people with cameras wandering around when we got ... read more

July 2nd 2011

June was a busy month for us, hence the delay in updating our blog. The first weekend in June, we had our first visitors from Australia, Megan and Michael. It was so nice to be able to show someone from home our new home, our new town and a little about our new life in Denmark. On the Saturday, we headed out into the main street to find it was the yearly Assens flea market. The main street had been closed off to traffic, so we wandered up and down, looking at the wares for sale (and buying a few things, like my funky red clock), letting our visitors stop to chow down on some Danish hotdogs, visited our favourite Cafe Cupcake for a good coffee and cake (of course!) and then continued to wander through ... read more

I never thought I would ever have had the opportunity to go to Middle East, but in late April I had the chance through work to go to Iran, Dubai of the United Arab Emirates and Lebanon. I think I was the only one in the office to actually agree to visiting these places, but I’m glad I did as it really is an eye opener to visit these countries. On Easter Sunday, I headed to Copenhagen Airport and flew via Istanbul in Turkey to Tehran in Iran. There are certain dress rules in Iran, so before getting off the plane, I had to cover my hair (not completely, but it is the law that women cover their heads) and of course I’d made sure I was wearing appropriate attire (long sleeve shirt, trousers and over ... read more
