Saturday 14th May 2011 Dornoch to Loch Ness 62 miles........................ Quite a short driving day today as it was quite heavy showers and the road we needed to take was closed due to an accident. We stopped at Evanton to try and find a walk to Black Rock Gorge but sort of gave up as the rain had started and carried on driving along the Cromarty Firth where we stopped and watched a group of seals swimming and playing in the water! We also had a short stop and a walk along the river at Beauly where there is a 12thC ruined Priory of the valliscaulian order, one of only three houses outside France. It was visited by Mary Queen of Scots in 1564 who called it Beau Lieu ( beautiful place). Nothing too spectacular! We ... read more

Wednesday 11th May 2011 Gairloch to Lairg 111 miles.................... Scroll to bottom for more photos! It was surprisingly sunny when we got up and although still a little bit windy, it didn’t seem too bad a day. A typical April showers sort of day with dramatic skies and rainbows! We first drove to NTS Inverewe Gardens which overlooked Loch Ewe and spent a pleasant hour wandering the azalea and rhododendron paths, past the ponds and up to the viewpoints and finally the walled garden. Onto NTS Corrieshalloch Falls, a quite spectacular gorge, carved millions of years ago by glacial erosion and with a torrent of water plunging 150ft over the Falls of Measach. We walked across the swaying suspension bridge to the viewpoint overhanging the gorge. As the weather was quite good we decided not to ... read more

Tuesday 10th May 2011 Portree to Gairloch 124 miles...................... Wet and windy is an understatement. The rain was lashing down and the wind was blowing a gale!! I know I am prone to exaggeration but it was really pretty bad! We decided to hole up in the campsite for a few hours as it does seem that the weather up here starts bad in the morning and slowly clears up through the day with the best weather about 5.00pm when the sun appears to be at its highest? It also stays light now until about 10.00pm. We set off about 11.30am and true enough the weather started breaking with glimpses of the sun through the showers that were passing through at a rate of knots!! The ground is absolutely sodden and the water is pouring down ... read more

Sunday 8th May 2011 Fort William to Arisaig 49 miles....................... It rained in the night and it was raining when we woke up! We had considered attempting to walk up Ben Nevis as they say it takes between 6 – 8 hours taking it steady but with the weather as it was it didn’t seem too sensible! Maybe next time! Had a short drive along the Glen Nevis road and then turned back to drive to Neptunes Staircase – a series of locks on the Caledonian canal where we had a short walk and then drove along Loch Eil to Glenfinnan to see the monument dedicated to Bonnie Prince Charlie and also the viaduct that was used in the Harry Potter films. It was still raining although the sun tried to come out when we were ... read more

Saturday 7th May 2011 Isle of Mull to Fort William 59 miles...................... Rained quite heavily overnight and although the sun was sort of shining in the morning, it was fairly obvious that further rain was imminent! We drove to Tobermory and had a walk around before catching the ferry for the 45 minute crossing back to the mainland. The rain had stopped and the sun was just trying to come through as we drove off the ferry and we followed the pot holed C road, single track with passing places, along the loch. It was a renowned wildlife area so we kept our eyes open for sea eagles and otters but only saw a flock of sand martins that were nesting in holes in a sand bank! Also saw another group of fifteen or so seals ... read more

Friday 6th May 2011 Staffa and Iona 54 miles................... Forecasts aren’t always right and we awoke to a beautiful sunny day! The bay was even more beautiful but we left at 9.00 am to get the ferry to Iona and Staffa where it had been promised we would see seals and puffins. The boat looked decidedly small and was being tossed around quite a bit in the water so it was with slight trepidation that we boarded and set off! Staffa was an incredible island. It looked quite flat when you first see it but as you get closer you can see it’s made out of columns of basalt formed from molten lava 60 million years ago! Quite impressive! The boat off loaded us at the landing stage and we walked to the famous Fingals Cave ... read more

Wednesday 4th May 2011 Arran to Oban 105 miles..................... Awoke on the Isle of Arran pretty early as the birds sang their dawn chorus at about 04.30am! It was lovely to hear – infact there was no other noise at all...just the birds! Its not very often that you get total quiet but its lovely to hear it when you do!! It was another blue sky, sunny day so we were off on our travels by about 08.00am and went down to the south of Arran before driving back up to Brodick where we went for a wander on the beach. Stopped off in the NTS Brodick Castle and gardens before deciding to try and get the ferry at 10.45am to mainland Kintyre. It was a beautiful road, if not a bit bumpy, and twisty and ... read more

Tuesday 3rd May 2011 Castle Douglas to Isle of Arran 97 miles..................... Well here we are on day 4, no sign of any internet – lucky if we get mobile phone signals!! We watched TV last night and saw that we have two days of good weather left before the rain moves in so we decided to move north and try to get to Oban for Thursday. We didn’t want to miss anything though so it was an early start to Threave castle.....a half mile walk took us to the River Dee and views of the ruined 14thC castle with a bonus of talking to an RSPB person who was there watching an ospreys nest. We were also lucky enough to see the male osprey standing next to the nest preening himself! Onward to ‘the most ... read more

Sat 29th April 2011 Blackpool 216 miles .......... We have an old campervan, well it’s a 1993 Fiat Ducato Fox Autosleeper called Chugalug!! It goes really well, as long as you don’t mind going everywhere at a max speed of 60mph – which we don’t!! Well, if I’m being really honest, I think Chris would like to drive something with a little more oomph, hence why we have decided to try and sell it and buy another one next year after our world trip........ Anyway, I digress......We have always wanted to see Scotland and everyone has told us that May is the best month as the weather is usually pretty good and more importantly, the midges haven’t yet appeared!! So with Chugalug duly serviced and spring cleaned we hit the road – our only intention on ... read more

SPAIN 6th March – 17th March 2011 The worst news! Its official! Little dog is dead. We saw our neighbour as we came back from Morocco and I decided to ask her about little dog just to confirm what we thought would be bad news and indeed, she cast her eyes and pointed to the sky and confirmed ‘muerte’. We can only assume that by pointing to the sky, that ‘little dog’ has gone to heaven! We didn’t like to ask what happened ( I probably wouldn’t have understood the Spanish answer anyway!!) so we don’t know whether it was natural causes or accident....... On Sunday, despite rain threatening, we decided to go to Mijas horseracing at Mijas Costa Hippodromo. Usual format of five races on a sandy track and because of the rain earlier in ... read more
