Hester, 20F, Dutch, History student with a passion for languages/writing/theatersport/teaching/movies/meeting new people, but most importantly: TRAVELING!

Inspiration
In 2006 I lived in a youth hostel in Amsterdam for 6 months. It was an amazing experience! Waking up every day, meeting new people, hearing stories about different parts of the world.
The first day of my stay I brought a book with me, thinking I might get bored. I never opened it. I tried, but somehow there was always someone more interesting to converse with. 6 months later I threw the book out. It was still unopened.
Best memory of my stay there; the missionary from Papua-New Guinea who spent 3 hours explaining me in broken English about his work there.

I guess you could say this missionary from Papua New-Guinea inspired me to travel. It’s my usual answer when people ask me why I travel this much. Papua New-Guinea is still my ultimate travel destination, though I’m saving it till a later date.

Right now I’m focusing on Europe and Latin-America (though I want to see all parts of the world). Unfortunately, as I still study at University, I can’t travel as much as I’d like. Usually I go away for the summer (2009 Colombia/Ecuador/Peru) and visit several European cities throughout the year.

Places I’ve visited in the past (which are/will be part of this blog) are:
- 01/01/2009-10/01/2009 Barcelona and Madrid (Spain)
- 20/12/2008 - 28/12/2008 Gheorghieni (Romania)
- 31/01/2008-15/09/2008 Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil , Chile, Paraguay and Peru; living in Cusco for 3 months (learning Spanish and teaching English), then going to Bolivia for another 3 months (living with a small jungle community) and ending the trip by traveling across Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay for 6 weeks.

Language
This travel blog is written partly in Dutch, partly in English. I’m not sure yet what language future messages will be written in. It all depends on what I feel like (and how much time I have). Right now I’m working hard to translate/improve older blog entries. I think it’s a waste to just let them sit, though I realize most definitely need improvement (most older blog entries are originally written in Dutch and quickly translated into English).

Change of plans. Unlike promised, this post will not include the actual trip report (which is still in production). Instead, it will include my thoughts on Istria. I’ve been thinking for several weeks now how to write this message. Obvious, as I went there on a press trip and was heartily welcomed by all Istrians, I feel inclined to write something positive. And I do have sincere, warm feelings towards the place. Yet, at the same time… I cannot ignore this strange feeling I have inside. Would I return to Istria? I would have to say ‘yes’ and ‘no’ [View Full Entry]

Every country has its own set of traditions. Some are considered good or welcome, whereas others are preferably hidden or banished. Take for example the little Spanish town of Buņol, which welcomes thousands of visitors every year to participate in their massive food fight at La Tomatina. Or take the restricted Dutch luilak, nowadays so rare and uncommon most Dutchies themselves have never heard of it. Still I think it's a hilarious feast, where late risers are brutally awaken with loud music, eggs, fireworks and other forms of torture. Istria (Croatia) also has a festival that could potent [View Full Entry]

Istrie, Kroatie Europe » Netherlands » Gelderland

(For now Dutch only, will try to add translations soon but life is crazy busy right now.. Might take a while. :)) Het is me gelukt.

(Dutch, and a tiny part translated in English. Am working on it, but life is crazy busy right now.. Might take a while.

English only! Christmas in Romania Spending Christmas in Romania was an amazing experience! Through family I was invited to celebrate Christmas with a Romanian family in this tiny tiny mountain village in Transylvania (Gheorghieni). Christmas couldn't have been better. It might have been my first white Christmas EVER (there was over 30 cm snow in some places!), and it not.. it was definitely the WHITEST. The journey to Romania With an Interrail-ticket and a bag full of books I set off for Romania. The train ride over there was supposed to take about 35 hou [View Full Entry]

Basic Dutch version only.

Torewa mail 2 Hi David and Sarah, Thanks for your response. I completely understand your message and request for more volunteer feedback. I must admit, to me itīs a bit of a shock to read you havenīt received any other volunteer feedback up till now. When I was at Torewa for the last time we had several big volunteer meetings discussing the problems in the community and our possibilities for helping. We were struggling for several hours, what would be the best thing to do. We came up with a ton of different ideas to change/improve the situation but ended up [View Full Entry]
