Now. I don´t know what was written last time. or i forget. The soccer game was a blast. It was raining, and there were plenty of people for a good pick up game. the soccer feild is pretty incredible, a grassy clearing amidst the cloud forest with rectangluar goals made from little trees stuck in the ground. one ¨sideline´ is jungle, the other is barbed wire between trees. The backdrop tö the setting is shear mountains rising into the clouds. the game is fast paced and aggressive with alot of shouting in spanish. Most people playing in big rubber boots (gummi stieffel!). the whole affair ended after someone kicked the ball into a giant hornet nest... inch long, flourescent blue, very angry hornets stung two people. one in the neck, one on top of the head. ... read more

It´s the middle of the work week at La Hesperia and we are tired! Zack and I have spent the past few days doing a lot of different jobs. I´ve been spending a lot of time tending to the vegetable garden - making new garden beds, mixing in cow poop, and other farmy stuff. This morning I took the mule down the mountain with the milk, dropped it off, and rode it back up the hill! Apparently it´s pretty hard to get him to take you all the way up but he must like me. :) The work has been really hard, but is making me appreciate how much work goes into running a smallish organic farm! Yesterday we had a lecture on current and past politics in Ecuador that was very interesting. I dont really ... read more

Hello from the small beach town of Canoa! What? Why aren´t we at La Hesperia? Right after we got there we were told it was a long weekend (every other Friday you don´t work) and most of the volunteers were headed to the beach! So naturally we went too. The bus ride from Quito to La Hesperia was exactly the type of bus ride my mother told me not to go on! Oops. I think they´re all like that Mom. I think it could have been worse, but we were definitely careening up and down windy roads on the edge of several mountains in the Andes passing people in the opposite lane. Any wrong move could have sent us down a massive cliff. But, hey, this way of travelling is apparently working for them. Despite the ... read more

This morning Zack and I went to visit the Old Town. After being ripped off by a taxi driver (terrible, but a lesson learned) we walked around and ate lunch at a small shop. We mostly people watched! We were amused by all the 5-8 year old little boys running around trying to polish everyone´s shoes! Zack was asked twice if he wanted his shoes polished, but he was wearing sneakers, ha ha. Anyway, the architecture and buildings in that area are beautiful. The views walking around are fascinating because you will look up a crowded street and see a huge mountain! We hadn´t adjusted to the altitude quite yet, so we were a little slow and tired. I think we´re adjusted now though, but we´ll take some more time to see Quito when we come ... read more

Hola! We have arrived in Quito! We got here almost 24 hours late because of the massive flooding in Atlanta that delayed/cancelled/added to our flights. Miraculously our bags arrived with us. We´re currently at a hostel called Posada del Maple and are about to cook some pasta! Within one hour of being here I (Emily) have already met two people who know two people (Jenn Hare and someone else I know of from Essex) that I know!!! Crazy right? It´s great to be back in Ecuador and I can´t wait to practice my Spanish. Emily & Zack... read more
