Day 2. March 9, 2011: Quito and Mitad del Mundo Breakfast We slept in until about 9 AM. Ah, vacation! The breakfast room is downstairs, outside the gate of the hotel off the central courtyard in the former wine cellar. Roll/butter/juice/café con leche and huevos (revueltas or fritos). The two women that served breakfast each morning could have used some happy pills, but it was fine and got us going. Exploring Quito We then walked to the Plaza Grande (aka Plaza de la Independencia). We tried to enter an old church but it was Ash Wednesday so it was closed to tourists. Day 1. March 8, 2011: getting to Quito Air travel Anne got coupons to get into the Continental Club. It was nice because we were able to get some snacks before our flight. We then took a 5 1/2 hour direct flight from Houston to Quito. We are both used to traveling through much larger airports than Mariscal Sucre International Airport. There are ~1.8 million residents in the metro area so at least one of us was expecting a larger terminal or set of terminals and more restaurants and cafes but it worked just fine. Because we were in row 7, we were able to get off the plane pretty fast and make it to and through customs before the rest of the crowd.
