Today we started with an excellent breakfast on the square in Old Town Krakow. I had the “English” Breakfast with fried egg, mushrooms, sausage, bacon, and baked beans. Sara had the “American” Breakfast with a mini omelet and pancakes with maple syrup. The pancakes were more like muffin tops. More importantly, they served iced tea mixed with fresh fruit – it was wonderful. There were no free refills that did not stop me from ordering a few glasses. I can’t wait to try this at home. After breakfast we found our way to the bus station and boarded the local bus around 10:20 AM. After a 1-½ ride through the countryside of southern Poland, we arrived in Oswiecim: more famously known to the rest of the world as Auschwitz. The Germans changed all Polish name to ... read more

We left Warsaw, Poland at 11:35 AM and arrived in Krakow, Poland at 2:30 PM. We thoroughly enjoyed Warsaw and had a wonderful time watching the UEFA EURO Cup 2012 final at the Fan Zone in downtown Warsaw. It was estimated that 150-200 thousand people gathered at the Fan Zone to watch Spain beat Italy 4-0. Not only did we enjoy watching the game at such a venue, but also a thunderstorm that passed through during the game added to the experience. We found Warsaw to be a very nice city with wonderful people. I am sure that the EURO Cup enhanced my experience, but we both enjoyed our time there. We were both amazed at how the city was able to rebound after being flattened by Hitler and the German military and being under Soviet ... read more

After sleeping in until 9:30 AM, having breakfast and getting ready for the day, we boarded a local bus and headed for the Warsaw Uprising Museum. We arrived at the museum around 12:00 PM and did not leave until 3:45-4 PM. This was a wonderful museum that told the story of Germany’s attack of Poland, in general, and Warsaw, specifically. Importantly, it highlighted the Warsaw uprising against Germany in 1944. This uprising was led by the People’s Army, but also included local civilians and members of the London Underground. Despite their efforts, the German military level Warsaw and the Poland High Command was forced to sign the capitulation treaty on the 2ndof October 1944. Poland would not regain their independence until 1991. After leaving the museum, we took the local bus back to the Polish regional ... read more

Despite delays in Detroit that caused some excitement in Chicago as we ran through the airport in an effort to catch our flight to London, the remaining legs of our travels were fine. We departed Chicago at 10:50 PM (Friday, 29 June) and arrived in London at 11:50 AM (Saturday, 30 June). After a quick lunch, we departed London at 1:55 PM and arrived in Warsaw at 5:00 PM. From the airport, we took the local bus to our hostel (Hostel Helvetta) in downtown Warsaw. After check-in, we went to dinner at a local restaurant - the food was excellent. Sara had a boiled potato stuffed with beef, and I had a beef/pork combination that was wrapped in cabbage. Although exhausted, we decided to spend about an hour walking through downtown Warsaw. We were most excited ... read more
