Geo: 8.88507, 37.8479I'll try this again, my last version is lost in cyber space?I left Addis on the morning of 1/15 for a 2 day trip to Ambo and the Wenchi Crater Lake. Making my way to the main bus station, I found the correct mini bus for the 125 KM trip west. The mini-buses in Ethiopia legally seat 14, including a driver and the young man who handles the money. The fare to Ambo is 24 birr/ passenger. The gross is $25US, how does anyone make any money? The cost of diesel fuel in Ethiopia is more than in the USA!We quickly leave the city, and the transition to the countryside is swift, and welcomed. The noxious odor of diesel fumes is replaced by the scent of eucalyptus trees. About 25 km from Addis, we ... read more

Geo: 9.02274, 38.7468This is my first entry for our travel blog. I'll attempt to maintain the same lofty standards as Carole.I've moved base camp from the luxurious Hilton to the pretty basic Itegue Taitu Hotel in the PiazzaDistrict. What the hotel lacks is more then compensated for in being located in the older main district of Addis Ababa....lots of shops, activity...feels vibrant! The Ethiopian government has changed the rules for tourist visas, a 90 day version is no longer available upon entry to the country. But today I have the visa extension in hand the, after a 3 day effort. Yesterday was my 'interview' process, conducted by 4 different government officials. Apparently I must have said something funny to the first person, and she noted, in Amharic, what I had said. Each official then added their own ... read more

Geo: 9.02274, 38.7468It is hard to believe we are back in Addis and I leave tonight to return home. I will be home Tuesday evening!!!I will continue to work on the blog once I get back. I will download photos and add more details on hotels, modes of travel and costs etc in case anyone out there is looking for specific travel info. The blog is far from complete. Richard's journey continues for another six weeks. He will travel to areas south and east of Addis and many of his destinations require long hours of travel by road and will take him to some very different cultural experiences from Omo Valley tribes to the muslim city of Harer. It will be fantastic I am sure.Yesterday we visited the fabulous ethnological museum here. It is housed on ... read more

Geo: 13.4967, 39.4753We traveled by land from Hawzien to Mekele - and easy 2 - 2 1/2 hour drive on mostly paved road. Mekele is a very new city relatively speaking and it is very progressive. You can see and feel the difference from where we have been as soon as you reach the outskirts of the city. Instead of dusty, rocky streets congested with sheep, cattle and donkey traffic, it was paved and looked very industrial. The first thing you see is a huge cement plant and then a truck assembly factory and then as you get into the city itself it is obvious that things are different here. Men in business suits, women dressed for the business world (not carrying anything on their backs or their heads), clean children and no one yelling 'farengi, ... read more

Geo: 9.145, 40.4897The trip from Axum to Hawzien was relatively uneventful. We went by private 4wd vehicle and it took about 4 hours. The road is mostly gravel and there are some interesting stretches of steep up/down switchbacks which are especially interesting when the driver turns a sharp corner going up hill and you are immediately faced with a herd of sheep, cattle or people walking with 3-5 donkeys loaded for the market. Everything on foot scatters in every direction. It is somewhat unnerving. Our stay at the Geralta Lodge is our 'splurge' for this trip and it is lovely. It is owned by an Italian engineer and is only about 4 years old. The place is lovely. More about that later because the geography here is SO much like the Moab area of Utah that if ... read more

Geo: 14.1297, 38.7158Ethiopia is way ahead of the western world in conservation! The housekeeping staff is very careful to provide only the amount of toilet paper that might be needed in one day (it's a good idea to have a roll with you - just in case). The towels are carefully rationed and controlled based on the number of beds in the room. If you have a room with two beds, you get two towels. But, if you have a room with one double bed, even if two people are sharing you only get one towel. We asked for an extra towel at one hotel, which they gave us - no problem. We left both towels out to dry when we left for the day and when we came back we only had one towel! Since then ... read more

Geo: 14.1297, 38.7158First , thanks for all the New Years wishes. It came in pretty much unnoticed here because of the difference in calendars. We flew to Axum (Aksum - alternative spelling) and have 3 days here to see the sights and soak in all the ancient history. Axum is a refreshing change from Gonder. It is much smaller - 50M vs. 200M poplulation. There are fewer vehicles so the air is cleaner and even though Gonder's streets are paved it always seemed dusty - not so here.Axum is one of the oldest cities in the world. It is the birthplace of Eastern Orthodox Christianity which dates back to the 4th century AD. Most attribute the religion to King Kaleb in the 4th century and, of course, the legend of the Queen of Sheba thrives here. ... read more

Geo: 12.6, 37.4667We spent 3 days trekking in the Simiens with Alebachew Abade, a guide we had read a lot about on Trip Advisor and personal travel blogs. He turned out to be great. Alex picked us up at 6:30am (farengi time) at our hotel and we drove to Debark which is where the permit office is for The Simien Nation Park. The drive is about 2 1/2 hours on a typically dusty and often a bit rough road as there is construction along the way as well. With permit in hand we then drove to Sankabar which is the starting point of the trek. We watched Alex work through the details for a scout and pack animal arrangements and then we headed out ahead with Mamo-Alem our armed scout. The scouts are former DERG militia ... read more

Geo: 12.2403, 37.3008Today we headed out for a side trip to Gorgora. This is a small town on the northern shore of Lake Tana and most famous for bird watching and a monastery with 300 year old original paintings. Today was also our first real experience with a full scale scam - more on that later but as a result of it we did not stay in Gorgora as long as we would have liked. There isn't much to the town, if fact, we arrived at the Gorgora Hotel and walked to the lake and the monastery from there and did not really see a 'town' per se. That wasn't what we went for so it didn't matter. There isn't much activity on the north end of Lake Tana. There isn't enough money in Ethiopia for thhis to ... read more

Geo: 12.6, 37.4667This entry will actually cover the last few days. First, thanks everyone for all the birthday wishes and the Christmas greetings. Even though Ethiopians don't celebrate Christmas (Leddet) until January 6/7, many children and some adults wished us Merry Christmas as we were walking around the last couple of days.Dec. 24 was spent getting to Gondar - via the usual local mini bus transport. Always an interesting experience but this trip was relatively uneventful - no flat tires, no need to change transport to a beer truck etc. Our young guide arranged even arranged for the van to pick us up at the hotel although we did make a stop at the bus station where there was much haggling and scouting for more people going to Gondar. We were finally on the road and ... read more
