What a week! After my whirlwind weekend of fun with Brooke Kelly, I met back up with Tory in Bangkok and took an overnight train to Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand. Somehow during the trip, I got really sick and had a fever, runny nose, bad cough, etc. so the first day in Chiang Mai, I spent face down on my bed. All day. So unusual for me! Thankfully, we're staying in such a great guesthouse which for the first time since travelling has provided us with CLEAN SHEETS! They even smell nice! The downside is that the septic system is not so great and once in a while, our toilet backs up and we get surprises from the pipes from the rooms above. EWWWWWWWWWWWW! Although my cold never went away, the fun began on my ... read more

This weekend has been so fun! On Thursday morning, I took a ferry off of Kho Pha Ngan and then took a bus to the nearest train station in Surat Thani. The train to Bangkok was supposed to leave at 7pm but was delayed by an accident (!?) for 3 hrs so I waited at the train station forever. I should stop expecting things to ever leave on time! Delays are the name of the game I guess. Anyway, the train finally came and I was off. It was the first time I had taken an overnight train and it was great! I loved it! You get your own bunk that you can fully stretch out in. I had the best sleep in a long time and was happy to wake up in Bangkok the ... read more

Ko Pha Ngan A minivan, a bus, a boat and a sawngthaew (a pickup truck w/ two benches in the back which acts as a taxi) later, we finally got to Ko Pha Ngan. It was a pretty long day and we were happy to get settled in a guesthouse called 'Same Same' (hahah) at the beach town of Hat Rin - ground zero for full moon party action. Like the gilis in Indo, the island caters to backpackers and tourists on vacation. Hat Rin beach consists of mostly restaurants, tourist information offices, guesthouses and resorts, and most importantly, stalls and stalls lined up along the beachfront selling plastic buckets full of a mickey of alcohol, redbull and coke (selling from $5-10!) Every night here there is a party on the beach where everyone dances crazy-like ... read more

After a long day, night and day of travelling (crossing the border into Thailand after a night on the bus), we arrived in Krabi town in Southern Thailand. The town of Krabi was pretty - it had a nice walkway along the water and had the best night market for food. There are stalls and stalls of different foods including fruit and desserts. Most of the time, we'd use the old point and hope for the best and ate some really delicious meals as well as new discoveries: mango, sticky rice & coconut milk or timbit-like almond covered chocolate balls. YUM! The main highlight of this area are it's beautiful islands. To visit them, we did a day boat trip along w/ every other tourist in Thailand. There is a reason that everyone wants to come ... read more

Hello again! This time, I'm writing from Malaysia. We've been in the country about a week, arriving in Kuala Lumpur, the capital city from Singapore by bus. The bus ride was only about 6hrs and went by fast since I was deep into my latest book, 'The Time Traveller's Wife'. Our bus driver was hilarious - he spoke always like he was yelling and had about 2 teeth. So we were dropped off in Kuala Lumpur and had no idea where we were. The bus station is an insane place - so congested w/ traffic so we were let off on the street. We figured out where we were and headed to Chinatown where most of the backpacker hostels were. We found the BEST hostel ever (slightly pricey) but made up for it in lots of ... read more

Hello all. The past 2.5 days have been expensive but jam packed with interesting stuff! We have been doing a lot of exploring around the city of Singapore and I have learnt so much just in the past couple of days about this country. So how can I describe this city?! First of all - the national passion is shopping. There are shopping malls EVERYWHERE. I've never seen anything quite like it. I don't understand how ppl can shop so continuously and passionately! The shops are always chock full of ppl buying up a storm! Secondly, it's an hodgepodge of cultures, religions, ethnicities and architecture. There are three main peoples of the Lion's City - Malays, Chinese and Indians. Like all cities, there are ethnic areas where there are certain shops and food. Similarly in Singapore, ... read more

Hello, hello! So since leaving Lombok, we have flown to the island of Java which is home to most of Indonesia's population. We spent a couple days in the city of Jogjakarta before heading on to the capital city of Jakarta. In Jogja, I spent a lot of time (and money!) visiting temples in the area. The first set of temples were Hindu and Buddhist temples that were built in the 9th century. Originally there were 250 temples I believe all in one area but an earthquake in the 11th century knocked them all down. They were later rebuilt by the Dutch in the late 1800s but the temples were incredible. Firstly, the original design and construction was fascinating - the temples were built out of stones that are shaped like puzzle pieces that have female ... read more

Hello, hello! I'm going to try to set up a travel blog instead of emailing everyone. I will try to keep this to the point and not too long since, as always, the clock is ticking :) So, we've been in Indonesia fo for about 12 days now - we started on the island of Bali where we first spent a few days in the surfing Mecca of Kuta. It was chock full of hot Australian surfers and tourists galore. It was a very busy and lit up place with McDonalds, Pizza Hut, etc. While we were there Tory & I spent a day learning to surf which was so fun! I really loved it and hope we'll have the opportunity to go again. We then took a bus inland to a town called Ubud (famous ... read more
