North America » United States » Utah » Zion National Park December 2nd 2015

C: We arrived into Zion in the evening and the road in is probably the most awesome road we've ever driven down. Huge mountains towering over us with massive drop offs into canyons to the side. The road continues right down to the base of the canyon and then into the small town of Springdale where we were staying. The sun had gone down by the time we arrived and there was a different kind of crazy scenery - pretty much every building covered in Christmas lights, even the street lights had been lit up to look like candy canes! The town was completely dedicated to tourism, loads of hotels, motels and places to eat. We found a little Thai restaurant and had some excellent Thai curries. The next day and we were ready to explore ... read more

North America » United States » Utah » Bryce Canyon November 29th 2015

R: when we arrived at Bryce canyon it was snowing pretty heavily. The lady at the last motel did warn us we were going higher. We had about 2 daylight hours left to experience Bryce canyon in the snow. We headed straight for the Sunrise point, the first of the viewpoints into the canyon. The first view was incredible - thousands of rock formations all sticking up out of the canyon of varying different sizes, all made out of bright orange rock. (Early readers will remember me referring to Hoodoos in Canada). The orange of the rock combined with the green of the fir trees and white of the snow is truely a sight to behold. The space and expanse is huge in the canyon - you can see for miles - that's when the clouds ... read more

North America » United States » Utah » Capitol Reef November 28th 2015

R: sounds a bit like a children's book... We moved on from Arches to Capitol reef, a smaller national park in between there and Bryce Canyon. Cate wasn't feeling too well so spent much of the drive with her eyes shut - so I am writing this bit as the only witness to the day's activities! It's about 3 hours drive between the two along Highway 12 - an official "all american road" apparently. I never really worked out what this actually means, but it is possibly one of the most scenic drives of my life (up there with the Transfagarasan road in Romania). Capitol Reef had some good vistas and lots of interesting rock formations made of numerous exposed layers. There were some Native American petroglyphs (rock carvings) to be found, and I did a ... read more

North America » United States » Utah » Arches National Park November 27th 2015

R : We set off for the national parks... via Walmart. Amazingly, the Americans seem to be able to control themselves the day before Thanksgiving in a way that you don't see Brits behaving sensibly in a supermarket in the UK Before Christmas. Loaded with supplies we headed south. It's about 250 miles from SLC which took just over 3 hours. The road takes you up over a mountain range where there was a bit of snow on the top. We have been nervously watching the weather for the last week as a winter storm was threatened, but it amounted to nothing... We arrived at Arches national park with about 40 miles worth of fuel left in the tank, which kind of limited our fun a bit. The park is about 300 square km, but you ... read more

North America » United States » Utah » Salt Lake City November 24th 2015

C: So after another extremely early start (I am not good at getting up at 4.15am!) we caught our next flight to Salt Lake City for the start of our Utah national parks adventure. We'd been told that there wasn't a lot to see in SLC so we'd only booked one night's accommodation and so just had the afternoon to look round. First though we had to pick up our hire car for the next ten days. Now due to the USA being the home of the big car we had done what we always do and booked an economy car knowing, from previous experience, that we would be upgraded. Wrong. Roger was not a happy bunny when we strode up to a Chrevolet Spark that would be our mode of transport for our road trip ... read more

North America » United States » Washington » Seattle November 23rd 2015

R: After Juneau, we headed down the coast to Seattle. There we met up Jo and Rob (I met Jo at Bristol - for those who don't know) who kindly put us up for a few days. She was firstly kind enough to collect us from the horrors of Seattle airport ( we are glad we have passed through for the last of our 3 times!). After a pretty traumatic night and flight, we took it easy in the afternoon. We hit the shore of the Puget sound which sits between Seattle and the further islands towards the Pacific as it isn't directly on the coast. We had terrific sunset here, Jo nearly fell in the water several times, and we realised we really were poor at skimming stones. We found a salmon slide which had ... read more

North America » United States » Alaska » Juneau November 21st 2015

R: It's really Cate's turn to write the blog, but she really didn't like Juneau, and to be honest, I havent got much great to say either. Its small, it is state capital, and has lots of administrative buildings along with a large cruise ship port and everything around there is closed as it is out of season. We arrived at 5am and had to wait to get into town as nothing was running and there were no cabs. We got directed to a coffee chain which seems to be local to Juneau, it's interesting to see here are none of the big chains here except Subway. We looked at the sights by about an hour in freezing rain then ended up taking shelter in a museum run by a bored old lady who had been ... read more

R: We started our next day at 4am - we didn't want to mess with US customs and The Canadians we had spoken to, including our friend, Tracy the train manager, said get there 2 hours before. Nothing could have been further from the truth - they were still accepting passengers 15 mins before, and customs took less than 5 mins. Except for the people at the desk next to us who, when asked if they had anything to declare, said "No, all we have is a cooler of Kangaroo meat we picked up in Canada". When we saw them again on the boat they did not have their cooler of Kangaroo meat... We have splashed out on a cabin here - given our early start, it was nice to have our own space. It consists ... read more

North America » Canada » British Columbia » Prince Rupert November 16th 2015

C: We woke up on Sunday morning to about half a foot of snow! Roger spent quite a while digging the car out before we could leave the B and B. Our train was at 12.30 so I decided to go to a really pretty church we had seen the day before, it had beautiful icicles hanging off the sloping roof. It was Anglican so the service was quite familiar. The priest was from Essex though and had a very odd accent, Canadian with Essex boy twang! What struck me was how doughty the congregation was. As is increasingly the case at churches everywhere, the congregation was mostly fairly elderly but there was no way the snow was going to put them off. Two of the men who must have been at least 70 were outside ... read more

North America » Canada » Alberta » Jasper National Park November 15th 2015

R: Mojito night was fun. It was the same price for double measures as it was for singles - which made it a no brainer - and they were pretty good mojitos. The fun came when Cate's chicken Caesar salad transformed into Cajun chicken and chips. The waitress, up until now, uncaring and not particularly interested, then worked hard for her tip the rest of the evening. ("15% is customary"!) The next morning in Jasper we rented a car as there was no other way out of town. We took a trip up to Maligne canyon, a small but steep canyon through which water has been carving for years. We had wanted to do an ice-walk tour into the base of the canyon but as water was still flowing we couldn't go. However, although slippy under ... read more
