As we were only 500 metres from the zoo it seemed a shame to miss it out. The animals appeared content and they were in pairs with large enclosures. As it was 28C outside, the African animals probably felt quite cool by comarison. The zoo is located in a large park with many plants and huge banyan trees.... read more

We had a 2 day trolley bus pass and used day 1 for the scenic route and day 2 for downtown shopping and the historic route. All the drivers are characters and have a good line in patter whilst informing you of the points of interest. The scenic route covered the diamond head are which actually drives into the centre of the extinct volcano. You can walk to the top of the crater but it is a high security military base and like all American sensitive areas it can feel a bit intimidating so we stayed on the bus.... read more

The mall perports to be the largest outdoor shopping area in the world and after 4 hours in there I can believe it (the Hawaiian shirt may appear in subsequent blogs).... read more

Whilst out exploring (read as shopping) we had just stopped for a coffee break and were perfectly placed to see a brass band setting up. Not knowing what was ocurring we decided to wait around. After half and hour the band master opened the performance and we were priveledged with a 1 hour performance by the Royal Hawaii Band who apparently are the only state sponsored band in the US. The performance included local music and of course a montage of carols and the musicians and singers were fabulous. Right place, right time.... read more

We became younger today as we crossed the international date line on route to Hawaii. Whilst we may have gained a day, we lost an evenings sleep, since with a 01.00hrs departure from Fiji it was impossible to sleep on the plane. People coughing, sneezing incessantly and babies wailing would have posssible to cope with ordinarily but my noise reducing headphones had packed up (grumpy old man!). A small confession for family back home. We said this year that because of the trip, Christmas was cancelled for us. Well actually we landed on Christmas Island on route to Hawaii so I supose Christmas happened early for us. In fairness we were turfed off the plane with our hand luggage to wait on the tarmac for 1 hour at 06.30 whilst the aircraft was refuelled. Seen from ... read more

Oceania » Fiji » Nadi December 5th 2012

The place is very relaxing and laid back. The locals call it "Fiji time" so no one rushes. We understand why because it is hot and humid. It rains most afternoons/evenings but we are in winter time even if it is 32C most days. Not much to report as we are just sitting by the beach and have refused all tours. After NZ we are all toured out. Met a wonderful couple from Bedford, Sue & Tom ad we have enjoyed a few meals and wines in their company including the Tepanyaki meal featured in the photos. The blog will resume in Honolulu.... read more

Arrived Tuesday evening and the resort is fine but miles from anywhere so we are just relaxing by the beach during the day and by night we make friends at the bar then have dinner. We have had heavy rain in the evenings but sunshine by day. It is 31C and very humid. We have palled up with a nice couple from Bedford, Tom & Sue. We share many common interests so this means the conversation never dries up. I will post a few photos but really nothing much more to report until we get to Hawaii.... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Coromandel November 26th 2012

Having travelled for 400 miles of the south west North Island which was OK but not outstanding by previous standards, except for Waitomo caves, we decided to spend the last three days driving the Coromandel peninsular. This is a thumb of land east of Aukland separated by The Thames. This is not a river but a huge tidal area and near the head is a place called Thames. To drive all the way round the coastal route takes 6 hours and is very scenic but with narrow twisitng roads and hill climbs and decents. We had two overnight stays to savour the area which is a playground for the rich Auklanders. The east side (Pacific) is beautiful with coves, beaches and marinas whilst the west side is commercial with salmon and mussel farms galore. Our last ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Waitomo Caves November 23rd 2012

No reports from Plamerston North. Just a town for a stop over, same can be said of Turangi, although as the trout capital of the world I did want to wet a line. Had a nice meal (overpriced) in the fishing lodge restaurant. We did not stay here as the rate is $400 per night (£220 for a bed only). Next day was caving in Waitomo which is famous for limestone caves, glow worms and stalagmites /ctites. 3 caves and each one different which we covered over two days. 2 were very commercial but still enjoyable and the third was our own private tour, well there were actually 3 of us and a guide.... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Picton November 21st 2012

Stayed one night in Picton as we thought it looked good when we arrived on the south island 18 days ago. This town is the ferry terminal and it has shops, hotels and restaurants so perfect for our last night in the south. On the way over from Westport, a drive of 4 hours we passed through Renwick in the Marlborough region. Of course we could not go by without visiting another winery and this time we chose a favourite of ours as drunk back home. Spy Mountain produces a wonderful savignon blanc as well as a few other varieties and is highly acclaimed by the wine writers (available only in Waitrose or Majestic). Reasonably smooth crossing to the north island although Sue wished she had taken the last of the special pills. Driving north we ... read more
